AA Expansion In Miami

Mon May 13, 2002 11:08 pm

AA will add a second daily 738 non stop to BDL out of Miami.Maybe AA will add a little more to its northeast routes out of MIA with the cutbacks that US Airways is going through.

Great news. There certainly is a market. What are the times on that?

Great news! We really could use that second daily to Hartford. This is in addition to the new 6th daily to Boston, 3rd daily to Baltimore, and 7th/8th dailies to National coming in June, so they are definitley expanding the Miami-NE schedule.

Boeing757/767, the new times allow for Hartford residents to connect convienetly with AA's Latin American departures at night. It departs Miami in the afternoon at 1.30, arrives in Hartford at 4.45, leaves BDL one hour later, and gets in to MIA before 9. This will bring the Miami-Hartford market up to 5 daily non-stops: 3 daily DLX 732s from FLL and 2 daily AA 738s from MIA.

Related to MIA, National announced a 3rd daily MIA-LAS flight today. I am still shocked AA does not fly MIA-LAS.

Hey MAH4546, I have a question for you.

When are AA's main Latin America/Mexico/Carribean/Bahamas arrivals and departures rush hours?

thanks,

Blink182, the long-hauls (EZE, SCL, GRU, GIG, CNF, MVD, ASU) depart at night (9pm-Midnight) and arrive very early in the morning (4am-7am). The same time also sees the SFO, LIM, and LAX redeyes arriving. Other than that, everything is mixed. Most Carribbean destinations have at least two, often three dailies. 11pm-1am and 4pm-6pm are big arrival/departure times. Bahammas flights are all throughout the day. MIA-NAS is pretty much almost hourly.

If AA ever adds back mainline to JFK and LAX, American could come close to #1 carrier at BDL unless Delta expands more.

With the addtion, AA now has:

ORD- 6
STL- 4
DFW- 4
SJU-2
MIA-2

18 daily departures

Eagle-

RDU-3
JFK-3

24 daily Departures.

Just a couple corrections to previous posts:

AA's BDL-LAX is no longer in the schedules, so I guess that is off the books. Also, I'm not sure if PBI is considered a Miami-area airport (excuse my ignorance if it is not), but if it is that means BDL actually has 8 daily flights to the area---3 DLEx to FLL, 2 AA to MIA, and 3 DLEx to PBI.

Chuj, wow. Thanks for the update. That's really disapointing that they took it off the scheds again.

As for PBI being a Miami area airport, depends who you ask. The US Census does not (yet) include Palm Beach as Miami in metropolitan area counts; the United Nations, which counts population based on "urban area", does. Best way to put it: Palm Beach is to Miami what Baltimore is to Washington, D.C..

I heard speculation a while back of AA coming to YOW from MIA. I think that would work well. AC had weekly seasonal nonstops to MCO and FLL; I'd bet the combined traffic of tourism and latin-American connections could make the route work.

Cap'n Dan, I definitley think AA could make MIA-YOW work very well with a daily MD-80. It would probably work best if it were made to connect with the Caribbean flights. The connections and O&D should make it work. MIA-YOW would not surprise me.

we need at least one more AA flt from mia-phl. i dont know if they have dropped any flts, probably though, but i am pretty sure they downgraded a 330 flt to a 767 or 757. there's got to be more demand there. usairways sends a mix of 757, 321, and 767(i am pretty sure) and AA sends 2 738 and a 757.

It would not surprise me at all to see AA add another bank of domestic flights out of MIA to the following cities.ATL,PHL,YYZ,YUL,DFW,IAH,BNA,STL,and DTW.Also reinstating SJC,and SEA.With US Airways on the ropes why not introduce nonstop MIA-CLT and PIT.

RE: AA Expansion In Miami

Wed May 15, 2002 10:26 am

Doug...

ATL...AA recently added back the fifth daily; DL is the dominant on this route; its one of MIA's biggest O&D domestic markets (#3 or 4), but I think 5x daily is good

PHL...a 4th daily would not surprise me in the future; especially seeing how LGA, DCA, BWI, BOS, and BDL are all getting new flights this summer

YYZ...it was 3x daily until 04Sep01; what happened? It's a dense route and I was surprised to see the 3rd daily discontinued. Hope to see it back.

YUL...rumours were that they were going to add a 2nd daily before 9.11 happened.

DFW...there recently added a 9th daily and a 10th is coming in June; add that to the 6 dailies from FLL and the Miami-Dallas market is well covered. It is a hub route, though, so more flights would always work.

IAH...they used to have 4x daily, when did the 4th end?

BNA...only 1x daily, that really surprises me. I definitley could see them adding two more.

STL...definitley. Only 4x daily and this is supposed to be a hub route.

DTW...as I am sure you know, it was supposed to go to 3x daily this past December; hopefully it will this coming December. Of all the domestic markets AA serves out of MIA, DTW is definitley the most underserved. They have only ONE of 15 daily flights between Miami and Motown.

SJC...not if, but when. It is coming back, I'm sure of it. I say 12 to 18 months.

SEA...same with SJC; I give it 6-12 months.

PIT...there were some big rumours about PIT happening this fall along with MSP and MCI.

CLT...if US falters, it is a no-brainer.

I think some other POSSIBILITIES include: BHM (Eagle), CMH, IND, LAS, PHX, SAN, AUS, ISP, GSO (Eagle), return of SAV (Eagle)

Of course, not all of these are going to happen, and none are likely soon, but I think they are possibilites for the future.

Bigo747, flights to Belo Horizonte are temporarily operating on the route JFK-GRU-CNF. AA has four dailies to CNF, three 777s (DFW, MIA, JFK) and one 763 (MIA). The 763 goes on to Asuscion; so a 777 does the CNF run. On June 1st, AA brings back the second Miami-Rio frequency and CNF goes back to being MIA-GIG-CNF as in the past; daily 763.

What's all this expansion talk in MIA when AA is losing 500 Mil a quarter?

Where are these planes coming from? What AA city will see a reduction in flights to accomodate this build up?

Padcrasher, AA is adding 130 daily flights to MIA between now and 2006. Many are already on thier way. This summer sees one extra daily each to BDL, BWI, BOS, LGA, LAX, DFW, ORD, SJU, PAP, TGU, and BZE. Two extra dailies to DCA. New daily to STI. 5x a week to MDE; 5 extras a week to GIG.

Also MAR has changed to a daily instead of the 4x a week. The 4th MIA-IAH flight has been gone for at least 6 months. The planes are coming from the 20% reduction that occured 9/11.And also the very limited delivery schedule of new a/c and better utilization of planes.

On an added note, knowing AA, I won't be surprised to see a second daily to POP announced soon now that PN is starting the route. Isn't MIA-POP double daily during the winter?

I hope to see AA restart the MIA-BQN route in the next couple of years. BQN already has flights to the New York area so I think MIA would also be a good destination for BQN.

Doug,

I must correct one point, there are no unused aircraft now as a result of 9/11. Additionally, there will not be any additonal aircraft delivered to AA this year.

Chepos- I thought MAH said a few months ago that the reason American isn't flying to Medaillan and Barranquila is because the Columbian government wants to protect Avianca from too much competition.

blink, what you are saying is true, but Barranquilla is BAQ. BQN is Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. AA used to fly MIA-BQN. The only current mainland to BQN route is CO's EWR-BQN. There was a new start-up carrier last summer that was supposed to start MIA-BQN flights, but nothing ever surfaced.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I am almost positive AA only has 25 of 34 A300s in service right now with the other nine being convered to 2-class and then going into storage for a short while. Surely those could help with any Miami-Latin America expansion.

Southeast Airlines is supposed to start flights from EWR to BQN durimg summer (competing with Continental's 4 weekly flights) and last summer NAA operated flights between JFK and BQN. Im sure there could be enough demand for a MIA-BQN flight.

Chepos, there is definitley demand. As I've said before, 130 new (mainline) dailies between now and 2006, and I am positive that BQN will probably fit into the equation. I am very surprised that AA does not fly into BQN considering their dominance in the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. Not even flights from SJU.

AAEagle's only destination in the Western coast of Puerto Rico is Mayaguez(MAZ), theY have flights from Mayaguez to SJU and SDQ . Im sure that because of the proximity between MAZ and BQN AA Eagle does not fly to BQN . In the past AA used to have a DC-10 flight from BQN to JFK and they used to send 727's for the BQN - MIA flight. AA used to have flights from PSE to MIA and JFK.

PSE- Is Ponce Airport- In the past airlines such as Prinair, American Eagle, American, Carnival, Pan Am 2, Eastern have all flown into PSE. Carnival served the airport for almost 6 years (more or less)- the airline to serve the airport for the longest period of time.
MAZ is a small regional airport unable to handle mainline AA flights .
If MAZ couldhandle mainline flights Im sure AA would add flights to either JFK or MIA. Mayaguez is Puerto Rico's 3rd largest city and an important manufacturing center . It is far from San Juan (3 hours) so people flying to the states either fly out of BQN or AAEagle via SJU . The best thing about MAZ is that it's startegically located right in the Middle of Puerto Rico's west coast making it easy for people from Puerto Rico's Southwest and Northwest to get there.
AAEagle fliights are usually oversold from MAZ to SJU due to the high volume of connecting pax flying AA mianline to the mainland.
