BA 777 At Luton

Tue May 14, 2002 3:26 am

On Sky News a BA 777 was shown departing Luton Airport (London-Luton) In Bedfordhsire with the England world Cup squad to Dubai for training before heading to the World Cup. They even had a BA stairs and a full complement of flight crew. Since when does BA even operate out of this airport and howcome they did not just use Gatwick or Heathrow? And did they have to transport the airstairs with logos to Luton or did they just relable an existing one? Apparently this 777 will stay with the squad flying them wherever they need 2 go. Richard Branson eat your heart out. This one is worth more publicity than one of your Virgin stunts

ITN TV news managed to keep any easyJet orange out of shot which is a great achievement since Luton is a major hub for easyJet!

BA positioned the aircraft in empty from Heathrow, the steps came by road, they also had a 777 in Luton last week to take Arsenal to and from Cardiff for the FA cup final, the England 777 also had stickers 'Official Carrier of the England Team' since the downturn in Business BA have been doing a lot of charters on their aircraft and it is perfectly feasible that this aircraft can stay with the group until they are either knocked out or win but it will be at a cost to the FA, I am sure they wont be doing this for free. The Choice of Luton was the FA's presumably becuase of the quick departure procedures and the location of the training ground where they all met up yesterday morning.

They've squeezed 747s into LTN a few times.

Considering BA have in the past painted or stickered aircraft for the Olympic Games, Rememberence Sunday, the World Cup, wouldn't it be appropriate to paint up a 744 in the Commonwealth Games scheme, considering BA is the flag carrier for the head of the Commonwealth and for once, the games are coming home to the UK...?
A 744 visiting fellow commonwealth nations on the route network would be a great PR stunt, not only for BA, but for the games also.

The England team met up at St. Albans the night before departure, not all that far from LTN.

Vfw614, you forget the magical rule: it's very easy for non-Londoners to get to London. However, it seems to be absolutely impossible for Londoners to use the same motorways & rail companies to go elsewhere! Hence, they (the fans) complained bitterly about delays going to Old Trafford for the semi-final by road and rail, and so there were a whole host of charters from LTN and STN to CWL for the Final despite it being only 139 miles (223 km) away.

Does anyone know the reg. of the BA 777 in question?
Also did anybody get a picture of it either at Luton or in Dubai, with the team on it?

Chelsea also flew into Cardiff for the final.

David: The thing with the Semi final and the final was that it was 2 London teams and sets of fans travelling on the same stretch of road/rail for the whole journey. At leat when you have teams from outside London playing each other, the fans are usually coming from different places, therefore not clogging up the same bit of road/rail.

I was at LGW on the morning of the cup final and saw the check in desks for an EAL charter to Cardiff. Do you think they flew VFR following the M25/M4?

hI all

I have a pic of the BA 777 at Luton but only the back half, A.net would not accept it as it is a bad photo.........

It made Luton look very small, but good to see another long haul aircraft in Luton.

Leigh

Arsenal I think that they were travelling Club or first as the Sky commentator said that there are flat beds in the aircraft which normally is one of BA's premium products. Besides I cant imagine Victoria Beckham (who seems to think she is Queen Victoria) who was on the plane with David in anything less than First Class.

The England team always fly in and out of Luton. One of my earliest memories was of the 1990 World Cup team landing there and Bobby Robson leading them off in front of crowds as fans. I think they used to charter Britannia aircraft too.
