TAP Should Join One World

Thu May 16, 2002 3:06 am

I really think they should. This would be great. I thought about this today when I read the latest new in www.justplanes.com that Iberia and TAP were going to codeshare on flights between Madrid and Lisbon. That's, for me, the beginning of a marriage. If TAP and Iberia get married, they would together become very strong in Central and South America, and in the sector linking the Iberian Peninsula, Northwestern Africa and some islands in the South Atlantic Ocean for example the Azores. I think that a lot of those destinations would attract many tourists and honeymooners.
I'm not saying that TAP and Iberia have to merge, they have to stay independant national airlines of Portugal and Spain respectively but they should work together like Sabena and Swissair used to, 5 years ago, and they are already doing so like I say in this post. Why? Because they are both located in the Iberian Peninsula and they have a strong Airbus fleet commonality.

I've been talking about TAP last month but then I was thinking, what major alliance should they join? Star, forget it, they already have a lot of partners and they are focussing on the German speaking side of Europe: Lufthansa and Austrian. Sky Team? Maybe. I don't see what would be wrong about TAP joining Sky Team but I insist on One World because a partnership with One World is more plausible than a partnership with Sky Team because they are already codesharing on flights between Spain and Portugal, and TAP used to belong to the Qualiflyer Group. A partner that used to be Qualiflyer is likely to team up with American Airlines. But it has both positive and negative aspects, the positive is that it will become very strong in all Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries, the negative is that One World would have too many European partners. Swiss is already trying to join One World.
That is how I see TAP's future. How do you see TAP's future?

I do not know a whole lot about TAP, but I thought they codeshared with American on New York(Kennedy)- Lisbon flights.

True, they are with Iberia(and possibly AA), but does Oneworld really need to cover the who Iberian Peninsula? Iberia out of Madrid is probably enough as Lisbon is not as big(as far as I know) as Madrid is and they are relatively in the same area.

I am by no means against it, but truthfully, is it really necessary? It sort of reminds me of Star and having Austrian,Tyrolene, and Lauda all in the same alliance even though their route networks are practically identical. True, Austrian owns part of Lauda(I think), but that is not the point.

My thinking is:
Sure, it won't hurt, but it is really necessary? I thought Oneworld claimed they were going to set the standard as far as route networks go in order to minimise overlap.

blink182, Lauda, Austrian, and Tyroleon are all part of the Austrian Airlines Group and all operate under the "OS" designator code.
