PIA Transatlantic - Who Is The Market?

Fri May 17, 2002 3:03 am

I've been wanting to know the answer to this for ages. Does anyone know who the main market is for JFK-MAN-JFK on PIA ? other than the Pakistani community. Does PIA attract other non-Pakistani passenegers on this particular route ? I remember being told by my travel agent, that PIA offered one of the cheapest fares for MAN-JFK return

I've flown PIA in the early 90s all the way from JFK to Bombay via Amsterdam, Istanbul, Karachi, and the transatlantic leg on a 747 Combi (I think) was filled with the usual suspects (Pakistani expats, etc) but also had its share of Dutch tourists, American students going on to Europe for their summer abroad stint, strangely enough a Trinidadian tour group headed to Rome, and a whole batallion of Indians who couldn't care less if it was PIA as long as they got a cheap fare.

Thanks Jaysit for the info. Okay, so now I presume, PIA still attracts its fair share of tourists.

I was in BHX last week and saw the load of a PIA A310 to Islamabad. Not one was European. All the pax I saw, and it was a full flight, were Pakistanis or Indians. So I'd agree with Jaysit: That is PIA's sole market.

Maybe, PIA need to do more, in terms of marketing, to attract the Western tourists. Instead of them opting to fly some other major carrier.

I don't even know how many seats they offer on the MAN-JFK-MAN sector! They may(?) have done well in February this year as the route grew substantially compared to Feb 2001 (just under 25% to slightly over 9,000 passengers). However, the positively shocking thought is that BA improved their own loads beyond recognition!

I flew on PIA in summer 1997 (FRA-JFK-FRA) when I was Camp Counsellors participant. 80% of that B747 passengers were Pakistani citizens and 20% young people like me from Europe heading to USA for their summer camp work.
