Will Continental Bring Back Gig?

Mon May 20, 2002 10:01 am

I read that VARIG will restart its JFK-GIG route soon, with a B767-300ER four or five times a week. Continental suspended its EWR-GIG route just after 9/11 and I am wondering if it will come back. The route was flown with a 767-200 (ER) and Continental has maintained the GRU route, from both EWR and IAH.

Also, with LH starting B737-700 BBJ all business class service on the EWR-DUS route, I wonder if CO will resume two class service with a 757. That route did perform reasonably well before 9/11, thanks to a lot business travel for both German and American corporations with operations there.

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't be surprised if CO continued the EWR-GRU flight to EWR-GRU-GIG, as they did with the IAH flight.

They do this already, GIG was never stopped at all, just stopped being direct and now has a stop in GRU

GIG is tagged on to IAH-GRU, they just transfered it from EWR. Although not the full 7 weekly frequencies.

What is the sense in having both flights continue to GIG? I am sure that both EWR and IAH-GRU flights arrive in time to make connections to the GIG flight. It is worthless having two half-empty planes fly to Rio when you can have one full one. Common practice. AA makes sure all their GRU/GIG/EZE flights connect with the ASU/CNF/MVD (respectfully) extensions from Miami.
