Reply To My BDL Topic

Tue May 21, 2002 10:45 am

Yes, I angered the Forum Admin posting the same topic in two forums (I was quite tired last night and thought some people don't visit all forums) so he/she deleted BOTH topics. I tried to email the Forum Admin but it returns the email saying it won't accept it from hotmail addresses. So sorry forum dude....

Anyway, just wanted to reply to those who did reply to my topics.

Jeff: What was your experience with the national guard dude? Is there a topic you posted about it? And I should have my photos back on Wednesday, as I dropped them off today  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

Original topic:
"Hi there all,
I am writing this back at my home in Williston, ND (ISN) at 12:42CST. I am
finally back home from a day of traveling from BDL to MSP to BIS then driving
the 4 hours to my I am quite tired, forgive me...
I arrived at BDL (Hartford/Springfield Airport, CT) at around 12:30 for my
1:35PM departure to MSP on Northwest Airlines (A319). After checking in and
receiving my boarding pass, I ask my parents to carry my carry on to the gate
while I go spot from the wonderful terminal A-B connector and take photos.
There is a US Air 757, WN 737, NW A319, and a US Dash 8 visible from my spot. I
begin shooting the 757 and soon enough the WN 737 is taxiing out,
*click**click**click*...another 737 soon replaces the one that just left, so I
got plenty of WN shots (already did from my SoCal trip tho  Big grin). Now a COexpressjet
ERJ lands and taxiies in, and soon enough another one arrives. I got plenty of
photos of those birds. By now it is time to leave, so I run to an ATM real quick to grab some cash for
snacks at MSP.... Our flight is boarding from down below as usual (gate 14) so
I walk down the escalator and greet the security dudes who aren't ready for me.
There are at least 5 of them plus a state police dude. An older man asks me to
see my boarding pass which I kindly grant. Now he gets very obnoctious with me
because I am wearing my camera around my neck. He asks if I have taken any
photos inside the airport. I am not stupid so of course I lie and answer no.
He asks if I am sure a few times and I eventually let out a laugh because it
seems like a joke. I finally say I took photos outside the airport to satisfy
his stupidity and the other screeners break in to say thats okay and not a
problem... But then I ask since when is photography illegal here, which they
cannot answer (I think it is possible for a single airport to legally do this
sh*t though under TSA rule isn't it?)
Finally I am asked to put my camera in a stupid little plastic tray,..then he
goes on and on about I must put everything in my pockets in
there..wallet...etc... So I do.... Then I ask if the x-ray machine is film safe
and he tells me yes,... Time for me to walk through the one deal (tired, can't
think of the exact name) and I start extra roll of film was
in one of my bottom pockets. Another screener asks me to step aside for a
wanding so I do...standard procedure etc..he asks if I am nervous and I reply
"No, I am used to it". He then tells me theres no need to be nervous (lol).
This screener is much more nice than the old geezer that gave me crap about my
camera so he warns me they will take it away if I even hold my camera up,.. I
finally grab my wallet and camera and boarding pass and get the hell outta there
as fast as I can. A Delta 757 taxiies in and a Air Canada B1900 is visible
(great photos ops, damn).
Now I am at the gate and meet my parents again, we are some of the last to board
so we hurry on the A319 and thats the end of that.. (trip report coming for my
flights). But anyway, Just thought I would share my experiences at BDL with you guys...
whatever you do, NEVER tell them you took photos there otherwise your hard work
just went down the drain....
I will have my photos back on Tuesday or Wednesday BTW, I took over 250 shots
throughout the region  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Angry? Nope. In a great mood actually, thanks for caring! Laugh out loud You can't post in more than one forum Serge. Johan wants ALL topics deleted if you post in more than one. Follow the rules next time. BTW, you got plenty of suggest deletions for that too, it's not just against the rules it's annoying and uncalled for.

No problem Serge, we learn from mistakes. Innocent You should have waited for my reply to your e-mail (it was in my inbox for about 5 minutes before this went up)... I was typing a reply to restore either one you chose since they both had replies, but since you have this it's not necessary. Now back to the topic... Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I am a BDL based photographer. I don't have any problems about the aviation photography at BDL. One time, a Connecticut State Trooper saw me while hold my 35 mm camera to wait for Southwest B737 (Canyon Blue c/s) arrived the gate at the terminal 'A' and 'B' connector and didn't say anything about my camera or taking photography the planes. As far as it is okay to take photo of the planes at the terminal 'A' and 'B' connector unless anyone calls the cops for suspicious activity. The cops may questions you about the photography. You will be fine, believe me.

Thanks for the reassurances John. But this was my experience with the security goons. I too had many cops and security officials walk by me in the terminal A-B connector and they didn't say anything. I bet the dude I described up about was a newly hired dude... as the other screeners corrected him but still said photography was not allowed past the security checkpoint... arghhh! That sucked.. I missed a lot of nice planes....

Do you have any work online? I would love to see some...

I tried to submit some of my BDL photos but they got rejected for low quality.. I really need a negative/slide scanner, as I still use a flatbed. I'll try and post them online though..

Search for 'Serge Walczak' to see all my 19 photos I have gotten online.
