Arriving 50-70 Mins Early...

Tue May 21, 2002 7:36 pm

Hey guys,
This may sound real stupid, but at AKL i have been noticing that many airlines have been arriving 50-70 mins early. Particualarly, MH and NZ from HKG.
Can anyone tell me why this is, and can it affect anything? ie...ATC telling them to wait before they can land.

Does this hapen frequently around the World??

Cheers
Guys
Mike

Winds are favorable when going eastbound. That's why you have transatlantic flights arriving sometimes 1/1.5 hours ahead of schedule. When the tailwind is very strong it's not unusual for an airplane to land that early!

I had a 40 minute early arrival for a Ryanair flight from "Venice" to London Stansted. The schedule flight was 2 hours! It helped when the flight took off 10 minutes early!!!

Marco,

Not necessarily because of winds being favorable. Usually pilot plan the flight, and you take into account the wind, that is why on eastbound, at the beginning of the flight, when they announce the flying time, it's almost always less then on the westbound leg.

But one of the main reason for flights arriving early into AKL from Asia would have to be favorable winds, right?

airlines also add extra time into their schedule to offset possible delays and do damage to their on time statistics. If flying time is variable it makes sense to use the longest as everyone is generally happy when the arrives early rather than late.

Here is my early arrival experience.

I flew United from AKL to LAX, we left 10 mins early and arrived almost an hour early. When we got to Los Angeles there were no gates available, so we had to wait 45 mins for a gate, then we had to wait for someone to tow us in cause the engines were shut down. We ended up being 5 mins late.
