Anyone Ever Have Anybody Freak Out On Their Flight

Wed May 22, 2002 1:47 am

I was just wondering if anyone has ever experienced a pax totally freaking out, either through anxiety or anger on their flight? If so, what did the f/a's do to remedy the situation?
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

On a Gulf air flight to Bahrain a few years ago, a man got up from his seat and started walking up and done the aisle furiously making a complete prat out of himself, he then came and sat on my brother's seat while he went to the lav. Obviously we told him that's one of our seats, he didn't want to leave, he told us he wanted a cigarrette at the back of the plane (we were sitting on the last row of Y). I called the F/A, she came and explained to the man he cant sit on someone else's seat and smoke aswell as it was a non-smoking flight. Eventually it took a lot of persuasion to get the prick out of the seat. We still couldn't understand why he got up and started pacing up and down the aisle so furiously Big grin

Weirdest pax i've come across so far.

On an Aeromexico flight from MTY a while back, we had this woman in her 50's freak out sitting next to the middle exit of a 757 (I was sitting directly behind her).......she started crying and angrily asking the other passengers if we had taken off (we were still in the platform)....for the take off there was a flight attendant sitting face to face to her trying to calm her down but she left for a couple of minutes during climb and then came back.......during those couple of minutes she was reeeeeally looking at the exit door next to her.....the flight was about 50% full so there was nobody sitting next to her just a guy accross the aisle, and when we noticed the way she was looking at that door, we both looked at each other and believe me we were ready to jump her in case she tried something with that door.......fortunately the FA came back at that time and offered her a drink and a cigarrete in the back of the plane (smoking section), that was the last time we saw her for the duration of the 4.5 hr flight.

When we landed at TIJ she was being helped down from the stairs by a couple of FA and a male FA........she had had way too many drinks but she was very very happy....blowing kisses to all the FA's and passenger in sight and waving goodbye to everyone.......she really didn't seem to mind about the regional twin propeller plane she was about to take from TIJ to LAX.

In response to your situation, I would like to see some research into the effects that non- smoking long-haul flights have on smokers (having never tried it I would not know), but it seems co-incidental that the numbers of air rage incidents shot up with the increase in non-smoking flights, and most of the incidents appear to be on long-haul flights.....

Maybe someone has some info on this....

Departing MAD on a BA 767 to LHR, some of the overhead bins opened on takeoff, and a woman a few rows back started screaming 'Oh my God, we're going to die!' but once the bins were closed, she shut up- kinda odd, but that's the closest I've come to having someone freak out on a flight I've been on.

I'm not sure leezyjet, some people crave for a fag and cant go on for a while without lighting up. This guy i came across must have been quite desperate for a cigarette.

Once in 1989, on very bumpy final approach to EWR aboard a UA DC-8 that had been reconditioned, and actually looked and felt as solid as a brand-new jet, a guy in the back started screaming how it was going to crash, we're all going to die, "this plane is 30 years old, they shouldn't be allowed to keep flying these death-traps," and all that. Naturally, it was just turbulence on a very windy, winter day and the flight from SFO touched down safe and sound.

What surprised me is that the FAs didn't do or say anything at all. Maybe that's the best way to deal with a moron.

I was not on this flight, but I would have loved to be on it. My aunt was flying LAN Chile A340 LIM-LAX. She never liked flying, usually she would take a pill to fall asleep, but this time she didn't take one. Well as soon as they were about 2hrs from LIM that Airbus started to rock like a boat in the severe turbulence (very common) She started screaming like crazy and didn't want to get up at all. My cousin who was also on this flight, said that the FAs were quite surprised when the turbulence hit, they could hear dishes in the back falling and water spilling. I hope I never have to fly with her, my cousin had the scars to prove how tight she was gripping his arm.

Why not carry a low dosage nicotine patch in the emergency medical kit. If it's a regular occurrence for passenger to have a...

I'm sure a this might draw mixed opinions, but what the hell...

Way back when Continental served Billings, my dad (divorced from my mother and living in Saint Louis) convinced my mom to put me on a plane by myself on a flight from BIL to DEN and continuing service to STL. My mom was quite reluctant towards putting me on a plane by myself, (and rightly so, I was four at the time,) but because there weren't any connections she eventually agreed. However, when she went to put me on the plane, some lady started freaking out on her. At the time, the CO flight served Great Falls, then over to Billings, and then back to Denver, and the flight attendants said that this basketcase was giving other passengers some trouble on the Great Falls-Billings leg. She got in my mother's face and was screaming at her and saying that someone was going to kidnap me, or molest me etc. She eventually had to be restrained, and I got booted up to First Class... Love I look back on it now and really don't think that it was a bad deal, considering that my parents paid for the FA's to look after me, and that there wasn't a change in planes, but I'm sure that there are plenty that would disagree. Nonetheless, (after apologetically waxing didactic) I thought of this crazy lady when asked if a passenger ever freaked out on one of my flights.

Yes, twice - like another poster - my Aunt is not a fan of flying. We were on our way to Majorca to endure the two week family holiday every year, and taking off on a 737 when there's a loud bang from somewhere. This prompts my Aunt to stand up in the bloody aisle, and yell very loudly to a crowded plane:

" Somebody do something !! The engines just fell off !!!! "

You can imagine that I wanted to dissapear out of an airlock.

The second time was coming back from EWR in January with Virgin Atlantic on a 747. I was seated next to an Italian guy who had never flown before, and he kept getting up and down, shaking on take off - demanded I close the window shutters ( annoying as I missed my view of Manhattan at night ) and kept consuming copious amounts of alcohol.

Upon landing at LHR, the guy was very sociable, very drunk, and seemed to have no concerns about the return flight.

On my LTU flight from Almeria to Munich, we hit some REALLY severe turbulence. Some guy in the row behind be (who drank too much already) went nuts and decided to LEAVE THE PLANE. Not knowing that it is impossible to open an airliner's door in flight, another passenger grabbed a fire extinguisher and knocked the mad guy off. Must have hurt, but it was quite a funny sight.  Smile

Another one was on my flight from SFO to MUC in an LH B744. I was sitting on an aisle seat, next to me was a black american about 2 meters tall jammed into the seat, and in the window seat, there was a maybe 25 year old German girl, who MIGHT not have been a frequent flyer. When boarding, she already made odd sounds as if she was giving birth to a child, then when the pilot put the flaps to takeoff position, she screamed (in german) "The wings are falling apart!!!!", then during takeoff: "It so loud, my eardrums are gonna bust" and after take off she kept yelling: "This is awful!! We'll crash, We'll all die". After listening to this for about a minute, my neighbour (who actually was a nice a funny guy) put a VERY scary look on his face, turned over and said with a very calm, slow but even more determined voice: "Look, girl. We do have two options. Option one: You shut the hell up. Option two: _I_ make you shut up. Got it?" We had a quiet flight from that moment on.

Years ago we had a deportee Egyptian national on our flight out of Tripoli to Malta. During taxiing this man freaked out to the extent that he started kicking the plane and shattered the perspex, the inside, of his window. We stopped and called the authorities who refused to offload the man. The pap was tied to the seat and was guarded by other pax during the flight. This did not deter the man who kept chanting from the Koran and constantly twisting in an attempt to free himself. The pax were constantly beating the man and I, then a junior FA, was ordered to stand by with a fire extinguisher in my hand which I was told to use to knock the man unconscious should the need arise. Needless to say I was terrified. On landing in Malta the police, who sent their best men, boarded and offloaded the man to a waiting Landrover (4x4). I will never forget this terrifying incident. To this day I wonder what drove this man to so desperately wanting to stay in Libya, and what happened to him.

Some people are just crazy. I've yet to experience people freaking out on any flight, and I hope it doesn't happen on any of my flights soon.

Once I sat in front of this lady that took full advantage of the free wine service on a Lacsa flight to CCS. When we started to land, we hit turbulence and she started to scream at the top of her lungs and wail her hands in the air. It was scary and funny at the same time. TGUman

This last Dec, I had a guy beating up some woman who he said cut in front of him in line for the lavatory on a flight. This was DL 30 or 31 (I can't remember which flt. # goes eastbound) JFK-SVO.

Everyone was tense after 9/11, so to hear the yelling and screaming got most people into a frenzy before the purser settled the matter. This incident took place in the Biz Elite cabin, and the man was made to sit in the back of the cabin as a result of his behavior.

After he was told any further misbehavior would be a federal offense, he straightened up, although he continued verbal abuse towards the victim.

On a mid-winter flight to Birmingham some years back our old Fokker 50 turboprop was hit by severe turbulence. Some passengers freaked out, yelling "we´re gonna die". But these passengers didn´t do it because they were afraid, they did that because they thought it was funny like sitting in a rollercoaster!

The following I posted this just a few minutes ago on a similar topic:
I once witnessed a fight between passengers because of smoking. It was between people in the last row of the non-smoking area and an irresponsible Mother sitting in the smokers section with her two small children. She was smoking all the time, blew the air to the non-smokers and mistreated her children with her egoistic behavior. Passengers complained at first because there was no clear division between the two sections and it later worsened because the mother´s reluctance to be more sensible. People had to be reseated at last.
As a non-smoker I was sitting in the smokers section a few rows behind because my girlfriend was a smoker then. I never did that again. The air was like hell.
