Depends! I can only tell you from my experience on intra-European flights: AF catering and in-flight service is a bit better than LH, but LH is generally more punctual and more reliable... and I found them better than AF. So I'd fly LH.

AF easily. They have PTVs in most of their planes in all classes, while I dont think that LH has any.I have flown AF several times from SIN to europe and my only complaint is that sometimes my bags seem t get lost at CDG.

Air France - friendlier, caring service, good catering, better inflight amenities. They've improved a lot during the last 5 or 6 years.
I'd only go for LH if AF does not fly to that particular destination, if my company pays the ticket or if LH are way cheaper than AF and I have to pay for the flight myself.

LH anytime. AF is too often on strike and they are quite unreliable. By the way, when transferring I think CDG is horrible, especially for those not speaking French.

G-KIRAN: LH does have PTVs in C and F class. And I'd gladly abandon PTVs when it means that I'm not required to struggle with lost luggage after landing.

the most relevant question on this forum seems to be: are you an event flyer or do you fly in order to get from A to B?
for the first group things like a personal movie display or looking up the legs of F/As is obviously mega-relevant when choosing a carrier, so for these guys, AF is ok though i don't know if AF really does provide PTV on all seats. If so...very well.
The track record of AF as concerns punctuality, reliability, flexibility when you have to connect flights is downright horrible, though it seems to improve nowadays.
I have to fly a lot, short and longhaul, mostly on LH, and there is certainly more than enough room for improvement, too, but when it comes to the things I've mentioned, especially flexibility to get you where you want to go, when something is going wrong, there's just nothing like LH.
So in the end it depends what you expect..if you fly once a year during your holidays, hanging around in CDG for 10 hours is probably great for you to watch aircraft..if you want to arrive at your destination without going crazy, well, that's another story altogether.

I'm both an "event" (in my free time) and a business flyer, but from my personal experience I never had any excessive delays with both AF and LH (IB is another story!). Both airlines/ alliances offer a network which covers most of my travels, so they are - from my subjective point of view - as reliable and offer an equivalent basic product.

Therefore I'm taking secondary features (amenities) into account when it comes to making my selection. And a this point, if there is a choice between the two, AF wins hands down for me personally.

I would take AF over LH any time. They have improved a lot and both onboard entertainment (PTVs in all classes on A332, A343, B777) and onboard service clearly beat LH's very average services.

Forget the stuff about lost luggage or concerns about punctuality, reliability or whatever. LH is not better than AF here as some people suggest. Possibly some people praise LH just because they are Senator card holders or frequent flyers but as far as the normal passenger is concerned, LH doesn't care. Some friends came back from a trip to Florida on LH and they told me it was horrible. LH lost the luggage and back at home LH tried anything NOT to have pay for their fault...by the way, FAs were rude as usual and food was bad as well. The same what I have already experienced severl times. No way LH any more...

I can only praise AF again as they showed me their reliability on aviation's worst day, Sept.11th. I was already on route to LAX on AF that day and had to return. AF managed the chaos at CDG very well, their employees did a great job. And all the time they remained friendly and helpful...that's why I love AF and why I can only recommend them any time...

Fly AF!

yes, it seems to be mostly personal experience, that makes one a fan of a certain carrier, or not. my old employer was AF-bound, and it was horrible, strikes when you just need it least, and if you missed a connection, well, bad luck. That's where i like LH...in most cases, they somehow make it work to get you on your way, or give you a good hotel or whatever. as for my private flights..I can't switch my attitude between holidays and business, I just want to get where I want to go as fast as possible without going crazy, and possibly together with my luggage. That's why I prefer LH anytime (though I love SQ and TG, but that was not the question here).

Sorry LH fans : Air France is better.

http://www.airfrance.com/double6/file/Y1/file_Y1.nsf/(Lookup)/AVION-mosaictempo/

LH just doesn't offer such a comfortable seat/ptv. Food is better too.

LH seat is simple & food less tasty.

Perhaps you like the yellow headrest at LH better ?

If you have to transfer at CDG then don't. For one reason luggage seem to appear not making the connection (not even if it's within the socalled minimum connection time and the arriving aircraft is just parked opposite to departing aircraft) and even if the AF representative assures you it will.

If you want to come to your final destination and if you want your lugage to come to the final destination, then fly Lufthansa. Also Munich and Frankfurt are better airports as CDG.

If I were you I woul probably take LH. And PTVs. I get tired watching those small displays. I prefere Lufthansa's flying cinema.

Sorry UDO, but I asked you before to try to explain why you "dislike" Lufthansa as mentioned in you profile.

For an aviation enthusiast it is something to prefer one airline over the other, but it takes a little more to "dislike" an airline and mention it in my profile and almost every post I make.
To be honest, I can't hear that "FA were rude as always" crap anymore. If you always generalise everything you want to say about LH it really gets ridiculous at one point.

If you want to be taken seriously, try to back up your statements and tell us your "nightmarish Lufthansa experience"! I really want to know.

I've flown both on long-haul. AF from Luanda to Paris (777), and LH to NRT (744). In both cases, I was lucky to be flying in J. I don't think there's much difference between them, although I agree personal experiences lead to differing opinions...

Both were on-time, provided excellent service and IFE-so I would most probably fly with both of them again.

If anybody doesn't like my posts, there's still the option to leave em out...ok?

I haven't had an absolute nightmare on LH yet, but I have had several transatlantic and domestic services yet and on most of them FAs were quite rude, food was average, seat comfort was bad, seat pitch a joke, and 12 hour flight without PTVs were just boring.
I wouldn't complain about one bad experience but if it happens anytime, then you are forced to switch.

I have experienced several other airlines after my last LH flights and I have found them better. If service, food, seat pitch, entertainment. Everything better, and in most cases much cheaper than LH.
In contrast to others I like to decide what to watch and how long. I don't want to be forced to watch a boring movie or cartoons just because the airline forces me to. It's just great to watch the flight track many times during the flight, or choose between six or more channels of movies. Especially when you are seated somewhere in the middle row, it's a great pleasure to have a PTV.

BA and AF offer a good seat pitch on the B777, Cathay on the A330, A343 or B744, or SIA on the B744. LH's seat pitch in Economy belongs to the worst.
And AF for example is just innovative. Their new Economy seats on the A332 are just luxury. Digital TV, a modern design which increases leg room and comfort. And AF offers outboard cameras now. That's just innovative and turns flying into something special. Only Lauda or Emirates have so far offered such features, now AF moves up. Just great, I like airlines which CARE about the passenger and that's why I don't like LH.

By the way, LH had a strike last year, and they have also lost much luggage so far....CDG isn't that bad...it seems many people claiming CDG is bad have never experienced it...

Ok, I admit, LH is not a really bad airline, but others are just better.

LH by far!
AF has bad service they never arrive in time. If you check the FRA schedule you would see that most flights that had been cancelled were AF flights.
Staff is unfriendly.
LHs staff is not that great but much better than AF.
PTV is no point even you have an personal entertainment system like Krisworld.

I have good experience with both, but mainly with AF, as I think they are also a bit more cordial. But anyway depends on the crew and the circumstances and also on the culture of the country. Think AF has also more passion.
The strike factor of AF is a bit annoying, but don't forget that many of the LH VC pilots went on strike too!

In general I prefer flying Swissair/Swiss which is in my eyes one of the best airlines worldwide!!!!!!!

Best regards!

I would prefer Lufthansa although I have only flown them twice! Both times were excellent! I am a Delta f/f so I have code-shared on AF a couple of times and was disappointed both times! F/A were rude, refused to speak English to us! I complained to Delta and they said they were getting a lot of complaints about the same thing! Maybe it's just a transatlantic thing!

I'd take Air France for a few reasons.
1. I've never flown them.
2. I've had only negative experiances on Lufthansa. Bad foor, horrible service, uncomfortable seats etc.

I've been to CDG many times over my life, and I've never had any of the bad experiences you people speak of. Sure, I've had a late flight now and then, but flights are delayed. This happens to every airline. The Air France terminal at is much newer and easier to navigate than FRA. Especially the new Terminal F.

For the service, AF, with no hesitation !!!!
5 years ago, I would have said LH.... But it was 5 years ago....
Today , AF has so much improved that you cannot compare !!!!
I have had problem on most of my LH flights (European and long haul; delays, food, broken seat, ...) Nothing like that with AF.

About the strikes at AF, they are not as frequent as some of you say, or as they were 5 to 8 years ago. And it is not because the UPS strike a few years ago has been called a " French Strike" that all the strike are made by French people or AF staff !!!

And for all of you saying that connections in CDG are difficult if you don't understand French, I have a question : CAN YOU READ ENGLISH ?
If yes, just open you eyes: all the signs in all the terminal are in French, English, and use the international pictograms ....

Enjoy your next flight with AF

Racko,

As a literature and geography student I don't need any advice on what books are. Beside the books for my studies, I also read many books for fun, such as thrillers or detective novels.
Maybe some people on this forum read books ONLY on flights, that could explain why they always state that arguments...
Radio? Wow, the audio channels offered are trash in most cases, only one or two channels play good music. And in most cases, only some songs of these two channels are good. But some people seem to enjoy listen to Britney's trash for twelve hours...Probably a very special kind of stimulation...
Magazines...if Focus, Spiegel, Stern, such magazines always disappear in my travel bag...but who reads these magazines all the time?

You are right, you CAN kill the time by doing something. There's always something which you can do. But going on a flight means having fun to me. It shall be an exciting ride, not just a 08/15 flight. I really enjoy watching the flight track channel and I can tell you on main screen flights they show it twice or only once as on IB last time...very nice. Instead they show dumb comics or a bad movie.
What's so ridiculous when some people just want to decide what to watch?

I'm still quite convinced that some people here shouting around have never had a PTV flight. I wasn't impressed by the idea of PTVs in former times but after having had the first experience on a SIA flight in 97 I was impressed. 12 hours without being bored, not even for just a minute...and you still can read, listen to music or do something else. But you have more options.

Airlines offering PTVs for all just care more about their passengers. If they PTVs were not important, they wouldn't be offered in First and Business classes throughout the world. Ok, these passengers pay more, but more than 40 airlines offering Economy PTVs show that you don't have to pay more necessarily...

Why fly an airline that offers less at a higher price? Yeah, maybe if you are a fan of a certain airline you would do that. I guess some LH fans still would prefer LH if they had straw seats, no meal service, or no seats at all...the main thing is they fly their airline...

Well, I remember a German saying here: Was der Bauer nicht kennt, das frisst er nicht (The farmer doesn't eat what he doesn't know)...maybe some people should try another airline apart LH first to be able to comment objectively? Or have a PTV flight first in before claiming how senseless these things are???

LH for others, comfort, excitement and fun for me!

Regards
Udo

Personally I would be tempted to go with Lufthansa, not least because they are part of a much stronger alliance.

However, if your stop involves a change of planes at CDG then definately go with Lufthansa: -

i admit i haven't flown by LH for a while, not since i was but 7 years old actually! however i do think the service was very good and plan 2 fly with them again. the flights were punctual, the food delicious, and the inflight movie most entertaining. Big grin the only downfall was slight damage to a suitcase, however i believe this was the fault of the airport, not LH, and they apologised despite this. The toys i was given were wonderful too.
however i believe both airlines are of a good standard, and look forward to flying by either  Smile

Udo,

I can atleast think of two other airlines that I've flown wich future outboard cameras. Cathay pacific and all Nippon Airways, a realy nice experience indeed, especially during taxiing and take off.

Back to the main topic, I'd go for Lufthansa. If you fly air France originating in BRU you have to take the Thalys to CDG as there are no flights between BRU and CDG on AF anymore. This I really dont like, but LH flies you to FRA, much better. Another reason not to choose AF is CDG, that really is the worst airport (dirty, old worn, dusty) I've ever seen ( I've been to airports such as DEL or BOM, and IMO they are far better than CDG).

UDO...

I am very annoyed at what you said about 'airlines who don't have PTV's don't care much for their passengers'.
This is a whole lot of crap. AirNZ don't have Personal Televisions, but they still strive to make every passengers flights a great one. AirNZ's Flight Attendant philosophy is to deliver service that is unique to their passengers, and to satisfy NO MATTER WHAT.
This is why they are continuously number one in the Australasian Region. Qantas now have PTV's, Air Tahiti Nui have PTV's, do you see them at the number one spot?? NO!
Saying stuff like this only shows that you are neither intelligent, nor wise to trust!!

And the comment about the Cameras on board Aircrafts...AirNZ have them, but still I think you would say, that they still don't care about their passengers. pffffff....

I am sorry if you do take offence to this, but I can obviously see, you have HAD some bitter experiences with Airlines that don't have PTV's. But all I can say is that that is your opinion.

Cheers
Mike

Terminal 2F isn't solely AF (I haven't seen any Delta plane at terminal 2F). TAM and JL also use this lovely but really disappointing (due to lack of things to do if you've to wait 3.5 hours) terminal.
