The Most Scenic Flight (long Haul Only)

Wed May 22, 2002 8:52 pm

Some suggestions

London- Bankok/Kuala Lumpar - over the Himlayas from Pakistan to India
London-Vancouver - over Greenland, Iceland, Baffin Island, and the Rockies
Chicago-Beijing - North pole and Siberia
Tokyo-Europe - Nothern Siberia

Has anyone experienced these flights? Any other suggestions

I have done LHR-BKK. The spectacular bit was going over Eastern Turkey with the arid mountainous scenery - awesome. India was just brown and dull.

Often on the IAH (Houston) > NRT(Tokyo), the scenery is excellent. You get the nice views out over most of the UTAH scenery and grand canyon type things and then you get all the snow peaks etc when you fly over Alaska. Beautiful scenery

Transatlantic, westbound ( any route), When you fly over Greenland on a clear day. The scene is of indescribable beauty.

Interestingly, all the window shades are down and the pilot will rarely disturb the passengers to see this ( for many) once in a lifetime view.

Any Australian flights because they fly over some vast desert terrain. The reddish outback looks fantastic from above.

I was on a MAS 744 en route from SYD-KUL when the captain made a left bank and told pax on the left side of the plane to look down... and there it was - Ayers Rocks! It looked so small from up there... like a small stone.

Eugdog,
If you consider Chicago-Beijing to be scenic then you can also throw in Chicago-Hong Kong as well. It's essentially the same route.

BKK-ZRH I flew once around 7000m/21000 ft with a Swissair M11 and there was a great view over canyons and everything... It was around 1998 I think.

KIX-ZRH also on a Swissair M11. The flight left around noon and it looked like the plane was hunting the sun, it is always in front of you and there was a nice view over Siberia.

Flew HNL-MAJ-KWJ-KSA-PNI-TKK-GUM two weeks ago and wasn't that bad too. 5 different Islands in less than 14h  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Flights from Europe to ATL, MIA, PHL, IAD etc. used to fly over BOS and NYC and I have seen Manhattan several times, during night and day.

ZRH-KUL on MAS 772 I have seen several cities like KHI, THR etc. in the night with a clear star sky. Wonderful, was even seating with my gf in the cockpit  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Sorry, one short-haul I have. Flew yesterday ZRH-GVA-ZRH and on both ways I saw the Swiss National Exhibition (EXPO 02) from around 4500m (13'500ft). I like the ZRH-GVA flight, it is short, below 30min, but if you see all cities as Zurich, Baden, Bern, Fribourg, Lausanne, Geneva and the Alps in the background. Thats one of the few moments I don't feel this strong need to travel around in far countries, mostly in Asia...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

cheers, have fun, I do

Actually, Beijing-Chicago in the summer......constant sunset the entire flight until you reach Canada. Beautiful when you hit the mountains in NE China.

I liked ORD-HKG last November. I saw a lot of glaciers and ice fields in Siberia along with huge rivers that freeze solid in the winter. It is pretty surreal. Approach into HKG with all of the little islands is cool.

I also agree, ORD-HKG is a very nice flight. Lots of stuff to look at down there. However, on the way back isn't that exciting as most of the flight is in darkness, even though it leaves HKG in the afternoon.

You're right, the HKG-ORD was a dull for the most part. Actually, about an hour or out of HKG, we went over Taiwan and could see the mist lifting off the mountains. That was beautiful. Also saw a CI A300 pass right below us. We cut over Kyushu and then over the Pacific and like you say, it got dark. We crossed back into the USA near Seattle- didn't see the sun until we hit Iowa. I think UA895 routing changes quite a bit. My dad flew it a week before I did and they flew a very different route than the Siberia-Mongolia-China that I experienced.

Back in 1998 I did BRU-LAX and OAK - BRU. Both flights offered great scenery:

- Greenland
- Canada
- Bay Area

etc etc...

Europe-California flights are always something special, containing spectacular views of Greenland, Northern Canada and finally the West Coast.
I remember one of my FRA-SFO flights was hitting the West Coast right over Vancouver and followed the shore the whole way down to California and ended up in the typical wonderful SFO approach.
I also remember flying FRA-TFS and having great views of Paris at night(including the enlighted Eiffel-Tower) and Madrid.

I had a great flight from AMS to MSP (KL665) one summer, over Greenland. The captain banked left and right for both sides of the airplane to see the spectacular glaciar below. There was a beautiful glacial lake that was beyond words.

Another great scenic long-haul is ORD-GRU (UA). This flight arrives around 10 in the morning, and in the Southern Hemisphere summer, you get 3 hours of morning light over Central and Southeastern Brazil. The hills around GRU remind one of Tuscany. I would love to try the daylight flights on JJ from GRU to MIA to fly over Jamaica and Cuba, Venezuela, all the places you only see on the map at night.

Cheers.

ORD-HNL you get to see a very nice part of our country followed by the great desent into Hawaii.
AMS-KIL (Kilamanjaro, Tanzania) You see Italy, the Sarhara desert and a lot of other great parts of Africa. If its in the day time you see Mt. Kilamanjaro but it usualy isn't.

London/Heathrow-Kuala Lumpur:
Overflew Phuket, which was really cool. If I am not mistaken, we were at a lower altitude compared to normal cruise altitude. The waters look so blue and the beach jsut look fantastic! If I am not mistaken, I flew past some really brown desert somewhere in the Middle East/Near East. Nothing interesting there, but it's really cool to see a city like Chennai lit up!

Aboot 4 months ago did a RTW trip and my third leg was from HKG-FRA on an LH 744. We went by way of Tibet-ULN-Southern Siberia- Moscow-and then Eastern Europe on the approach into FRA. Had a middle seat so could not see out the window but according to the inflight map we had a long 12 hour journey.

Sorry if this kind of violates the post, but an amazing flight is one from JFK-SEA-FAI.

First, the rockies, then the cascades, then Puget Sound, then Alaska.

Alaska, for anyone who's ever flown over it, is just amazing. No roads, no buildings, no lights, just mountains, mountains, and more mountains.

Any flight over the Rockies. Flights that make a scheduled stop in Anchorage. Delhi - Leh (you feel like you can reach out and touch the himalayas).

My most recent scenic flight was on a LH A340-313X from FRA-ORD. We passed over BEAUTIFUL Iceland! It was interesting, big, brown hills, the hot springs, and if you've noticed, you'll see a tiny farm every few minutes! Then we flew over Greenland! We could see icebergs all over the place, and then it was just land with snow and ice!
