Fri May 24, 2002 5:58 pm

In many topic it was asked which is the largest airport in terms of pax, which is the busiest and which airport is the biggest in terms of terminal and tarmac size.

But which airport has the highest number of transit pax??

and which one has the highest percentage of transit??

My guess is Atlanta for both -- I've read 80% of the pax are transit, and it's always been the 2nd or 1st busiest airport in the world.

I'd have to say LHR is pretty highup on that list too (don't have fact 'n' figures tho) but a majority of pax are transferring to one place or another, that's why it has been dubbed 'the crossroads of the world' and just about every major airline would like to fly there (if they don't already) Big grin

It may be Hong Kong, which has vast numbers of people transiting between Taiwan and mainland China. I think I read something like 20% of passengers at CLK are in transit between these two destinations. maybe more.

In Europe, FRA and CDG are probably highest. LHR has a lower percentage of transfer pax. AMS has a very high, but then the airport is a bit smaller than the big three.

SIN & BKK handle a great deal of transit passengers, and to a lesser extent HKG. SIN is probably the Asian airport most used by Australians because of the 'Kangaroo route'. Singapore is an important hub for QF flights linking Australian cities with services to Europe & other parts of Asia.

I'm sure ORD or ATL are neck to neck in this category.

Largest percentage:
I bet it is "Ilha do Sal - Amilcar Cabral" with more than 95% in transit. The number was even higher when all of SAA's flights from South Africa to Europe stopped there for refueling!

I think Amsterdam Schipol has been overlooked. Think about how small the country that it's in is. This is just my guess, but I don't think many tourists go to Holland in comparison with the U.K., France, or Germany. But, there is plenty of nonstop service EHAM from the USA and Canada. After arriving from Northwest, KLM, or another airline, you can take KLM to anywhere in Europe, and many places in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. My aunt and uncle always do this when they go to Nairobi. Drive from here (around KPHL), KEWR or KJFK on NWA/KLM to AMS, and then on to Nairobi. They get tons of miles too, and the NWA/KLM alliance doesn't even seem to care which you use to cross the ocean anymore.
