No, there are still several on the ATL-IAH route, among others.

Yep, there still are quite a few DL 727 routes. I know MSP still receives a handful...

The 727 still has about a year left in DL colors. More leave the fleet every month. We will find out next winter which city will be the last with 727 service. My money is on SYR/ROC. I fly there a lot so it HAS to be the last to upgrade to the 737-800. Kind of like how I always pick the slowest line at Wally World.

I know they have a handful flying ATL-CVG, I am trying to take that route this summer for a last trip on a 727 (its sad that Delta is the only large carrier flying this bird for pax, unless I am missing someone). I am beginning to think that that last Delta 727 flight will be ATL-CVG (or vice-versa), or a flight that will land in SLC.

I know a high-ranking Delta official on the inside. These are the words that he told me in person today.

"The aircraft is being retired from the Dallas/Ft. Worth base and the Cincinnati base this August. The only remaining B-727 jets - about 15-25 - will be flying out of the Atlanta base. They are due to retire by the first qurter of next year."

I guess the scary question is what will replace all these 727's as they leave the fleet in the next year? DL has 40+ 727's left and yet they will not receive any more mainline planes this year and next year they are only scheduled to receive 5 738's. Looks like DL's going to be doing some more shrinking or adding a lot more RJ's. For all those DL pilots on furlough...I think you guys are going to have a long wait.

Jeff

I think that Northwest is still flying their 727's. I saw one here at BWI a few weeks ago. When Delta and Northwest finally retire their 727's, we will have seen another phase in the jet age pass. With the Dc-9's, 727's,737 classics, DC-8's, 707's, DC-10's, and L-1011's gone, we can say that we are into the new age of airline travel. Just imagine the day whe planes like the A340, A330, 777,767,and 747 leave the skies and give way to a next generation of aircraft. Just a thought.

Yes, Northwest is still flying their 727's. I saw those in Detroit three weeks ago, I saw no less than three of them. Northwest will retire it's last MAINLINE 727 end of this year but there will still be a few charter flights for sports team on Northwest 727's early 2003.
As for Delta, I do belive that the last one will be retired in the middle of 2003, in exaclty one year from now, and the last flight will likely end in Atlanta. Delta has now less than 50 727's left. Delta and Northwest are the only two passenger major airlines still flying the 727. American just retired it.
Can anyone please give me a list of routes where Delta or Northwest will still be operating the 727 within the next year?

Zebfly2, you mention a list of classic airliners in your post, it is true that most of them are gone from the major carriers, but about the classic 737's you must make the difference between the first and second generation 737's. There are still a lot of 737-300/400/500's in service around the world. However, it is true that all the aircrafts you mentioned in your list are out of production.

The last 727 flight out of SLC is 1 June, and they are gone out of CVG by 1 Sept.

why would delta spend the money to repaint some of the 727's to the NC if they planned on retiring them in a year

I believe there are only 7 727's painted in the new colors all of which were done prior to 9-11 when the 727 retirement schedule was 2005. Obviously, no more 727's will be repainted since they'll be out of the fleet in less than a year.
