Someone told me that Royal Brunei is flying to AKL on a military charter basis, but flight code is "SC".

I think you know the guy, TG992  Big grin

Bandar Seri Begawan. There is only ONE international airport in Brunei. It is a very small country.

Will it be a direct flight from BWN ? or will it be a continuation of the PER, BNE or DRW flights ?
I like work: it fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours. Jerome K Jerome

Question: what possible demand could there be for a once weekly flight to Bandar Seri Begawan from New Zealand? Enough to substantiate even starting this route at all? Seems doubtful in my opinion.

It's not the NZ to Brunei traffic they're after, it's NZ to Europe.
BI is the backpackers' airline to Europe from Oceania - out of PER they consistently offer the cheapest return fares to LHR.
Ok, it's 2 stops, first Bandar SB (newish, but the least exciting airport in Asia)then Dubai or Abu Dahbi, then LHR; with no PTVs, no alcohol, no FFs, but 2-3-2 Y in a B763 is not the worst way to travel, and of course the fare is very attractive.
Besides the Sultan probably needs the challenge, and probably the money.

They don't mind if you bring liquor on board and serve yourself - look on their website.

Who knows how they handle bottles of wine/champagne?

Egypt Air used to give you a minibar at the gate from which to grab what you wanted and again you serve it to yourself out of respect for their customs of abstaining from alcohol.

RBA will not be flying to AKL- as stated above, it's a military charter. RBA has authority to operate to AKL, but only as a nonstop service from BWN, and therefore the plans were dropped. However, if Australia-NZ traffic rights can be obtained, then that's a different matter.

In-flight service on RBA is lacking in some areas, but the service is efficient and the operation runs fairly well. For the airfare, if given the choice of Garuda or RBA from Australia to Europe, RBA wins... no question. They also get a lot of repeat business from people who don't see a need for frequent flyer points (although RBA has its own program) and want reliable transportation at a good price. Cabin interior is quite tasteful (sorry- no pics in the data base) with light burgundy seats and dark burgundy carpet.

Perhaps I wasn't clear.

Royal Brunei are currently in negotiations with various parties to operate a once weekly passenger service to AKL.
