What Happened To Flight SQ345 (ZRH-SIN)?

Fri May 31, 2002 2:13 am

The flight SQ 345 (MAD-ZRH-SIN, operated by 9V-SMW) was scheduled to depart from ZRH at 14:10 pm, however due to a technical problem the fllight is estimated to take of at 19:00 (ZRH time). I went to SIA website and chose the time status option. The information available at the moment is that the aircraft will fly to S'pore via Dubai.
Anyone knows why is this flight going to stop in DXB?

Thanks,

Manel

Let's see if the SQ person from the UK can help. I would guess the plane is not able to operate the flight and being ferried back to Singapore.

Agree with HKGspotter on this. No reason for it to stop in DXB. Anyone?

A member of the airliners.de forum has seen a Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-400 making a fuel dump about 60km out of Zurich.

Here´s the original post:

----------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately I can´t translate it right now.....I´ve to go to my dentist....  Crying

The report just says, that the person above has seen a SQ flying not "normal" and which made several turn arounds during fuel dump at around 5000m outside of around 60km of ZRH.

It looks as the plane had problems in MAD and it should have left MAD earlier. So why do dump fuel over ZRH? Weird...
What does the Z mean at the end of the Flt. No?

Could be one of many reasons why they have to operate via Dubai.

Weight restricted due to the problem so are unable to uplift sufficient fuel for a non-stop flight.

Flight Crew duty time limitations.

MEL restrictions.

Just checked with a friend at ZRH (not working for SQ) and he told me that SQ took off around STD for SIN ( I remember that I have seen SQ leaving ZRH) and after around 90min they had a technical problem and had to return to ZRH again. At 19:24 they left ZRH again for SIN.
It could be that they make another technical stop, scheduled or non-scheduled at DXB.

SQ 345 returned to ZRH yesterday after dissolving technical problems. They made a so called heavy landing in ZRH due to hot brakes. Don't ask me how they can see it during a flight... Also I do not exactly know why they went to SIN via DXB but I can imagine that through these brakes problem they hat to reduce their landing weight to be on the safe side. So in this case -if it is true- the stop in DXB would have been for fuelling.

All aircrafts are equipped with brakes temp. monitoring system.

Some are even equipped with brakes fans on the ground.

Hope this helps.

Hi guys:

I've just phoned SIA at Changi, and the lady told me "the plane had to stop over in DXB due to operational reasons".

Yeah, I think they had to make a fuel-stop because I don't think that they would have been flying from ZRH to DXB with a technical problem and risking anything...

I dont quite understand why they cant fly nonstop to Singapore due to LANDING weight restrictions (unless for possible turn-around to ZRH). Take-off weight I'd understand .... hmmm, anyway, raises another point. If there's an all out war between India and Pakistan and Indian airspace is closed, then I guess we'd see more landings in Dubai from planes travelling Europe to Singapore (shoud be ok-er the other way round)

Danialanwar:
Just FYI, because you brought it up, India's ATC went on strike in April '97 and their airspace closed down for more than 24 hours. All carriers flying into/out of/through Indian airspace were caught flat footed. SQ had seven aircraft stuck in Europe, and goodness knows how many plane loads stuck in SIN. But yeah they have since planned out contingency plans if such a thing were to happen again, and DXB will be one of the major tech stop points.
