CX Say NO To MAN Return...for Now

Sun Jun 02, 2002 5:58 am

Copied from a letter from CX's Operations Planning Department:

Dear XXXX

Once again we would like to offer you our profuse apologies for the disappointment and inconvenience people have been caused due to the suspension of our Manchester service.
As I am sure you will appreciate, due to the economic downturn and despite our efforts, we had not been able to achieve the level of custom required to make this service commercially viable recently and we had to make the very difficult decision of suspending this service. Unfortunately, for now my response to your query about a return is the same - we are constantly and actively evaluating the possibility of reinstating this service in the future, and your understanding in this matter is much appreciated.
However, we do continue to have the code-share service with British Airways between London and Manchester and I hope personally we will have the pleasure of welcoming you aboard one of these flights in the very near future.
Thankyou for sharing your very fair and balanced views with us and please rest assured that your valued comments have been forwarded to the manager of our Airline Planning department for future consideration.
Yours sincerely

Regards

Shamu

Yup; have family in HKG, and used to use the route every 6 weeks or so.

For reference, here are the passenger numbers on the MAN-HKG route since 1986; BA only until September 1989 ( 2 weekly MAN-MUC-BKK-HKG or some such routing!); BA & CX competed from October 1989 until March 1991 (2 weekly each I believe though CX may have been doing 3 or 4 weekly in the latter part of the competition), CX only since then (just about adding 1 flight per week up to daily). I think the daily flights began in 1994 and the BA codehare in 2000

1986 - 011889
1987 - 009959
1988 - 012244
1989 - 013535
1990 - 026433
1991 - 026810
1992 - 036862
1993 - 068089
1994 - 145388
1995 - 112515
1996 - 110197
1997 - 098769
1998 - 092037
1999 - 078420
2000 - 087394
2001 - 039073 (6 months)

Source: CAA annual passenger totals. Number of passengers quoted does not necessarily mean that all the pax went onward to HKG. But then again, one doesn't know how many went via other hubs to HKG!

One only hopes that if CX return, it will be on a non-stop basis as a one-stop service will only compete against the current codeshare one-stop service...and one has suspicions that the F & J class traveller may be "encouraged" to go via LHR, leaving the Y classes to MAN and so they can then claim "it's not profitable" and pull out permanently.

Is it likely BD are considering putting their stored A332 to use on the route......?

Hasn't BD already used some it's A330's on the mAN-LHR route a few times?

Shamu,

So what route are you gonna take to HKG since MAN-HKG is dropped and no sign of it being re-instated? Maybe via LHR, using CX again or BA?

Arsenal

Recently I've used
LH via FRA
SQ via SIN
CX via CDG

Englandair, HKG is 'technically' possible on the A332. However, the payload sacrifice required for operating the most direct route over the Himalayas with adequate single-engine performance make the route unviable, and circumventing would exceed the 332's range.

Additionally, the rumour is still strong that LH will 'borrow' the spare 330 for trials on their current 330 routes.
