Phase II Expansion For NW At DTW

Sun Jun 02, 2002 8:30 am

Just new this week, NW plans to start phase II on the WorldGateway in Detroit.

Thursday and Friday, there was newspaper articles and news reports about changes coming to Concourse B & C out at DTW. NW is studying how to change the operations of Concourse C which haven't exactly worked as well as planned for the regional ops. They mentioned how Concourse C will be rebuild or reconfigured to improve operations. Also, gates will be added onto Concourse B.

I agree, that Concourse C doesn't exactly work as well as it should. The waiting area is way too small for the number of passengers and there can also be a shortage of gate space at times. People don't understand how to use the waiting room doors and don't line up properly. Good thing changes are coming quickly to make this new place even better.

Great to hear. I think this will definitely help the gate situation at Concourse C. It's a great facility, and the improvements should make it even better.

It is a shame about the C concourse as the rest of the DTW terminal is near perfect. Lots of room and space, well lighted and easily laid out. The C boarding area is just far too small. It would have been far too small without the CRJs, but adding them just made the problem aparent from week 1. People are always confused and crowded by the boarding area, always see people linning up at the wrong gate. Plus if the come in one one the AIrlink flights they et conused on where to go, especially if takig another Airlink flight out.

I just wish people had looked a head a little more, regional operations are far to impotant for todays airlines to do something like this.

If you've been out to C, you know it doesn't work.

The plans call for adding 9 mainline gates onto Concourse B. Currently Concourse B has only 8 gates, and CO has 3 of them. The remaining 5 are used for the Arvo's.

Concourse C will be be demolished and replaced with a two story structure with 41 gates and individual gate areas, like a real concourse.

Construction is supposed to start Fall 2002 and be complete in 2004.

Now, question is where will Concourse C ops go during construction??? Is the Golfcourse-type operation going to be reincarnated with the shuttle busses????? What can they salvage from the new place, can they use those regional jetways from a two story building? Interesting

Flyinryan99,

Here is a link to one of the articles on Northwest's possible plans for the Midfield Terminal.

Sorry, I don't have any links it was on Ch. 7 News the other night.

Unfortuntely, when NW & Wayne County designed the Midfield Terminal complex, they underestimated regional operations, and the whole landscape of regional operations has changed drastically in the past few years. Plans were created in the mid to late 90's. We're talking around 1997-1998. At that point in time, regional airlines where still somewhat of an afterthought compared to mainline operations. The industry, and especially NW was still heavily relying on turboprops. Well, things have changes, RJ growth has exploded, and NW quickly has jumped into the game with that. Airlines have realized how important the regional operations are to their mainline feed, and many new routes have been opened and become economically feasible with RJ's. 25 Regional gates with a common waiting area may have worked a few years ago, but definetely not now. Actually the current waiting area in Concourse C appears to be smaller than the old Concourse G in the Davey terminal.

Its good to see that NW realized that the infrastructure for their regional operations was insufficent and will be doing something about it. Its a good thing too, one could only wonder what they would be doing in the near future without it, given the many, many more CRJ's they have on order.
