SQ Confirms Interest In Australia

Mon Jun 03, 2002 8:43 pm

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation on TV has just reported that Singapore Airlines is interested in forming a third carrier for the Star Alliance.

The current sticking point is over terminal access guarantees at Sydney (surprise, surprise).

Cheers,

Justin

I suppose this isn't new news however the fact that it is being reported means something is happenning.

A search on ABC's website has yielded nothing.

Skystar,

Good news for aviation employees but nothing surprising in the wings. The evil. untrustworthy and vile SQ is there again?

Got some cheap stuff for them to pick up.

Shame so many Aussies had to lose their jobs in the interim.

What will we have?

The shame of the pacific, the scourge of the pacific and a too bit airline that probably will make it's workers ply the skies less than DJ.

How original!

I haven't found anything online yet, but last night, the 9.30PM news brief had a snippet about SQ.

I hope that members of this forum could just see this as another opportunity for travellers within Australia to have yet another choice, either in airfares or service.

It would also generate some jobs, add to the state coffers through taxes etc.

As far as the comments of specific members in this forum are concerned . . . nobody is going to change that. Damn if SIA buys or starts anything in Australia, and damn if it does not. I just hope that many of the dedicated staff of Ansett who are still looking for jobs find meaningful employment in whatever is started in Australia, whether it is started by SIA or any other airline.

I think a reason why SQ wants to start an airline so badly in AUS is because it's part of the Star Alliance, which is facing major trouble in Aus. A lot of FFs can't redeem their miles for flights in Aus, and rtw pass holders can't fly around in Aus.....

Mx5_boy, I note with some interest your comments regarding to Singapore Airlines’ “evilness”. I think what needs to be done sir is to look back over the last ten years or so and dutifully look thoroughly and in the most level-minded and unbiased fashion to come to the conclusion that ultimately, our beloved Ansett killed itself. For you to believe that SQ were the sole catalysts in its demise is an absolute nonsense and I can’t seem to find much in the way of support for your argument. Look back to 1987 when Ansett was taking delivery of the A320s into an a majority of Boeings. Look at the way Sir Peter Ables ran the airline. Look at the number of staff Ansett had and the hours the pilots and cabin crew flew for their salaries often up to 30% more than the comparable Qantas salaries. Ansett was one extremely inefficient organisation in desperate need for capital to “revolutionise” itself into a fierce and competitive force for Qantas to reckon with. Air New Zealand’s blocking of SQ’s bid to buy 50% was the first step in Ansett’s road to death as everyone with even a little in the way of common-sense realised that Air NZ had neither the capital or the expertise to turn Ansett around. It wasn’t until late last year when Ansett was on its death bed that Air NZ tried to get rid of AN in order for it to survive. Interest was shown by several parties including SQ who, following due diligence, realised that Ansett was already a gonna with little chance of a successful and economically viable improvement. If SQ had bought AN at that last stage, they would have been severely economically handicapped at a time when the industry was fighting for itself to survive. You can’t call SQ evil for not buying a lemon when it was in its last days of rotting. I think if you’d like to blame anyone late in the course of its demise, your attention should be directed at Selwyn Cushing – Air NZ’s former Chairman, not SQ and like others have dutifully noted, SQ is NOT a charity. You might not like the manner in which they do their business but you haven’t an argument – its frivolous jargon.

Krisworld777,

Do you think for one second, one iota of indiferrence to the amount of lives that have been destroyed in this country because of SQ loitering, Singapore Inc de-investing and the final curtain call of SQ pulling the plug on F/L's bid to keep an Australian institution alive, tantamount to being frivolous?

We don't play like that in this country.

Of course there are others involved in AN's demise, but I have never hinted at that not being the case. SQ are just one of many. However they are part of the pack, and I am entitled to pass my comments regardless of what others think as there is proof and SQ have admitted it publicly.

I am still disgusted and will continue to be so. SQ may start whatever they want in this country, but they will not get my patronage nor most of the people I know. And in every waking moment I will make sure, as an example not to have anything to do with *star* again.

I might not like QF so much, but at least it's Australian and there lies my instinct in protecting it from the nefarious dealings of SQ/NZ and all other parties involved in the AN horror.

If we do not stand against corporate rampage and in particular the abuse of aviation industry workers we will see a sector and a collection of talented people always fearful and terrified of losing their jobs and any prestige that they may have held.

Or should I go back, perhaps to the 1900's and allow my favourite industry to turn workers into virtual slaves and exploit their love of aviation through pathetic wages and dodgey companies?

Seems rather omnipotent to me.

Let's all forgive those involved, bake a cake, shove some artificially flavoured icing on top and lorde the new saviour of competition in the skies - an SQ based domestic carrier employing people on contract wages with not one single benifit? Somebody correct me please?

Even DJ are better than that.

No because frankly, its' SIA's money so there. False hopes? Maybe. Business common sense? Absolutely. Humanity? It's business.

"SQ are just one of many. However they are part of the pack,"

Could've fooled me.

"an SQ based domestic carrier employing people on contract wages with not one single benifit? Somebody correct me please?"

Whatever that means.

Wirraway,

From memory, last time DJ made an announcement with this much hype it turned out to be a cheap rent-a-car outfit.  Big grin

Seriously though, weren't these partnerships supposed to be announced last November/December. Any guesses

You are probably right, a storm in a teacup, I would not
have a clue as to what it is about, but with all the other
goings on you never know, you would think if was of a
major nature, that it would be the bearded one doing it.

HI ALL... SHALL WE JUST IGNORE MX 5 FROM NOW ON? I THINK HE SHOULD BE CONFINED TOGETHER WITH THE REFUGEES IN WOOMERA, SOUTH AUSTRALIA. HE DOES NOT SEEM TO UNDERSTAND THAT SQ COULD NOT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE DEMISE OF HIS BELOVED AIRLINE (WHOM WHICH STILL OWES HIM MONEY... BOO HOO!)...

Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

Wirraway and Rmm: Don't you just hate it when they don't give you full details? "Virgin Blue's new partner"! We don't give a toss about who's going to be there, we just want to know! Urhggh. Silly manipulation of our emotions!
