The problems in the International arrivals are not really Northwest's fault at all.
A. Not enough Immigration workers working. They have plenty of booths but not enough staff. Only 1/4 of the booths are used and that is during the big 12:00- 3:30 rush when arrivals from Nagoya, AMS, FRA, KIX, 2 NRTs and FCO arrive, often one after another or 3-4 at one time.
B. They have 7 carousels, that is better than the three they had at Berry, but still not enough if 3-4 flights arrive at once. Often 747 flights use 2 caroussels. AMS typically uses carousels 5 and 6, Tokyo 7-8, London and Frankfort 1-2, Nagoya and Osaka 2-3. Rome is new, I have seen them use 5-6 and also 7-8. Paris also uses 7-8.
C. Luggage carts- Smarte Carte is understaffed because they pay so low. Workers can't get carts back fast enough, no matter how hard they try. Often resulting in passengers when multiple flights come in not getting a cart.
D. Customs actually is pretty efficient. They often have agents walking around the luggage areas taking care of passengers right then and there.
E. One Northwest problem is in the transfer area where passengers recheck their luggage. The belts often break shutting down one lane backing passengers up for a long way.
F. Huntleigh security appears understaffed. They have 6 lanes, but the max ever open are 4. Of course the closed one always reads OPEN while the open ones don't say anything. Sometimes only 2 are open and there could be 3 flights going thru which makes a real clusterf*** down there.
