Lufthansa's New Livery?

Tue Jun 04, 2002 5:19 am

A post on Airliners.net dated 9/3/01:
---
According to airlinersonline.com:

Lufthansa (Frankfurt) (rumor of the week!) is planning to introduce a new color scheme that will feature different shades of gray on the fuselage with the traditional tail markings (confirmation of this rumor is requested).
---

Was that just a rumor? Or were/are those legitimate plans?

It was most probably just a rumor. I don't think Lufthansa is going to change its livery in the next years. They're too traditional.

I had heard that rumour several times, but it was delayed after the 11.9.
It should feature a fuselage in the "wellblech" design (don't know what it is in English) like this: to create a 3d-like look.

The current LH livery is 14 years old.

Looks like LH is doing pretty well right now financially. Any indications that they're ready to continue with those plans?

well, LH is far from being really well financially, though much better than any other carrier in Europe in terms of leverage.
Why would they want to change their livery?? It looks good, not a bit old-fashioned, and as LH tends to keep their aircraft pretty clean, I find it quite elegant (nothing like a LH coming out of a clear deep-blue sky, as seen from A5 coming from Darmstadt). That old "wellblech" look would probably look quite nice, though not on the whole fuselage, but please keep in mind the extra-weight of the paint, coating etc., that would have to be added.
Afaik, LH is working on a completely new coach, business and first class design, that should be realised from 2004 onwards.

Lufthansa is not an airline that´ll keep its livery forever. The current colour scheme is getting old after being introduced on arrival of the first B747-400 in 1989. But they´re not in haste, too. A new livery will have its perfect launch occasion with the advent of the A380 in 2006.

I thought the same as Na.

LH will present its new livery with the arrival of the A380. With every milestone (B707, B747-100, B747-400) in its fleet Lufthansa itroduced a new livery.

The current livery would then (2006) be 17 years old. The previous livery has been on LH for something about 20 years.

LH introduced an "experimental" new livery in the 1980s, but didn't adopt it because it was badly received by the public.

[If only LY could have followed such a strategy in 1999...they would still have their gorgeous old livery...!]

afaik, there will be some massive interior and IFE upgrades as soon as the A346s come online and i wouldn´t surprise if they´re already looking into a new livery.
however, i do agree that it seems more probable to come up with a new livery when the A380s arrive.

cheers

LH has to keep the blue tail. What may be changed is they grey belly, which is becoming out of fashion.

I think it would a very good occasion for LH to introduce a new livery together with the A340-600 new aircraft, new sleeper seats in Business Class and PTV introduction in Economy class next year.

Anyone have any ideas what will happen to First class. Single seats like most airlines (BA, UA, SQ) ?

Perhaps they will put more yellow details in the new livery.

Oh ya, the Flying Banana - gotta love it, huh?  Wink/being sarcastic But have a closer look at the Wolfsburg, and you´ll notice this is basically the current Condor livery, introduced with the 757-300 in 1999.

btw, I always understood the milestone for which the current LH livery was adopted was perceived to be the 320. Yes, the first 747-400 was delivered a bit prior to the 320, but that was more like "we´re going to have a new livery in half a year anyway". Not that it matters that much...

Daniel,

Well actually Condor Berlins A320's were the first to serve in the new livery. The first CIB A320 (D-AICA) was delivered on February 17th 1998 so over a year before the first 753 (D-ABOE) came along on March 10th 1999.

But about the new Lufthansa livery:
I think that it is still a great livery which fits perfectly to the time we are in. It's nice but nothing special... Maybe a little update of the livery would just be enough but I doubt we will see a major change. What makes me think more is the new concept that will be introduced with the A340-600. It has taken LH so long to prepare it so I just hope that it will be worth it and Lufthansa will then be there where it belongs... on a level with Singapore Airlines.

Yes, the current Lufthansa livery is old as compared to most liveries today. But it still is a very smart livery, despite its' age. I agree with those that suggest that a new livery would be appropriate when they A380 enters service, and even though that is still about half a decade off. I mean there are other airlines that are overdue for an updated livery, but LH's is the least of those that needs an update for now or the foreseeable future. As the old saying goes, "Why mess with a good thing."
