Why Does The An-124 Visit Your Town?

Tue Jun 04, 2002 10:58 am

If the An-124 or An-225 has ever visited your airport, why did/does it visit? How many of them are there, anyway? Is Antonov still making more?

I've seen the An-224 3 times in Tucson. The first two were to pick up.....things from a large company on the SW side of the airport. The third was to pick of a load of ostriches for transport to Australia. Australia needs to import ostriches?

Many 124s were built but only 1 225 was completed. There are parts for one more 225 in Kiev but I doubt a second will ever be built.

Volga's has a US cargo base and office in Houston so the An-124 is at Bush-Intercontinental-IAH very often (EFD-Ellington field sometimes also)

Their website has some good info on their IL-76s as well
Don't have the link right here but look for Volga you can see some good pics.

The 124 never came to ATL airport, but it did come to a military base in Atlanta. When that US spy plane crashed in China, eventually China allowed us to have it back and it was brought to an airforce base in Atlanta. The An-124 was used to transport it. Unfortunately I didn't see it. I don't even know if the base was allowing spectators.

Lt-AWACS,

Thanks for the link. A handy feature of a.net is that enclosing a link in <> will make it click-able.

In Denver, the AN-124 actually comes quite often. Every couple of months or so.

I am not 100% sure on this, but I believe it comes here to pick up some Norad employees and equipment (I'm guessing LARGE equipment) and flies them to Southern Florida, I believe the JFK Center.

Again, I am not 100% on this.

The An-124 is a regular visitor to NUQ (Moffett Federal Airfield, Mountain View, CA). This is because the plane is often used to pick up satellites from Lockheed Martin for delivery to Cape Canaveral or ESA's Kuroru launch site in French Guiana.

The AN124 has been to Nuremberg (NUE/EDDN)several times and loaded the following items:

cigarettes (yes, an AN124 full of cigarettes)

powerplant turbines

medical equipment

and probably many other things....

The An124 comes quite regularly to NCE (quite a small airport) to transport satellites for Alcatel.

When it came it took the parking space of 7 CRJ.

Volga-Dnepr An-124 was earlier this year several times in TLL (Tallinn, Estonia) for transporting humanitarian aid to Afganistan (mainly trucks and trailers for UN). I don't think they landed in Afganistan but somewhere in the neighboring countries.

Now that the ban on them has been lifted, they should start dropping by regularly here in YQG (Windsor ON). RA-82045 (VDA) was the first and only one to visit so far a couple of weeks ago. Before the ban they would also come around every month or so to pick up auto parts mainly.

Some An-124's have been manufactured as late as the mid 90's. AFAIK the productions lines are still capable of producing further a/c provided there are customers (although for the past few years they have just been converting 124's to 124-100's for the commercial operators). There might even be some semi-completed units (like the 2nd An-225 in the ADB facility near Kiev) waiting for funds for work to be completed.

AN124 has never been to Wellington (NZWN).
Nearest it comes to us is Auckland (NZAA) and with the Americas Cup coming up again, it becomes a regular visitor transporting yachts in from around the world.

I've seen AN-124's at ORD, IND, SDF, BDL, and at Airborne Express's airport in Wilmington, Ohio. The Ohio airplanes were picking big GE engines to take to Everett, WA for Boeing. In SDF, I've seen 2 at the same time; but I don't know why they were there. In the "Oh, by the way!!" department ; the AN-124 does not have a trimmable horizontal stabilizer, which should put restrictions on the max cruise Mach and max operating Mach numbers.

Actually, here in Denver when the AN-124 or the IL-76 comes in they always arrive with a crapload of pallets, then leave empty. Everytime before I go out spotting, I make sure I check the flight tracker before, so I catch them landing.

The IL-76 that comes most often is 7T-WIE of Algerian Air Force. Always in with Pallets, but leaves empty for FLL. and the AN-124 lately has been arriving from CYUL. It is full of Pallets, dropping off things, but leaves empty for CYUL as well.

Thanks for looking.

The last time we got a service by the An-124, it was to pick up some printing presses and bring them to...Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan.

The AN-124 often vists BDL on a weekly to monthly basis. They pick of P and W engines and Sikorsky helicopters.... Along with other various shipments including cars I believe.

If it goes to CGK - Someone asked for outsized cargo. Last time I saw it at CGK was for a Russian Trade Show in Jakarta, they piled all the stuff into the AN124.

I like seeing the AN124 at CGK because they parked it at Ramp 1A, which is opposite 1A(R) (Cargo), in open view of everyone entering the terminal complex !  Smile

If it goes to HLM (Halim Airport), and parks at the civil ramp, it's for an aid shipment for disasters.

If it goes to HLM and parks at the airbase, (it did that a few years ago), it was carrying several tonnes of AK74 rifles ordered for the police. (Night arrivals and departures)

ZRH is not a really Cargo Airprot, just one scheduled Cargo flight with F27/AT4

But on charter basis quite a lot of russian planes visit ZRH, also the AN124, mostly for big Industrial Parts (ie. ABB Turbins) and from time to time for Train Locomotives and things like...
