New York Floyd Bennet Field

Tue Jun 04, 2002 11:29 am

I have some questions regarding Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn after I went through the pictures in the database:

When and why was the airfield closed?
What was it used for before it was closed?
Are there still any aircraft there, is it accessible?

Thanks for your help.

The airfield is primarily used for helios, the NYPD, NYFD, Coast Guard and several other State and Federal agencies keep their helios there.

The field was a military field from WWI-WWII, not sure when it closed. It was never really and option to expand for commercial use because of it's location and size. It's surrounded by Gateway National recreation area.

AA flight 587 crahsed very close to Bennet field across the bay, NYPD choppers were on the scene in minutes. Here's a picture of a NYPD helio responding to the crash,

A very pretty control tower.

It is still accessible and has recently been home to some concerts believe it or not.

 Big thumbs up

What's about the hangars there? It seems like they restore some aircraft there. Does that mean that the runway is still open occasionally?
Are there any aircraft parked outside?

Yes, Flight Level, I also like the control tower!
