A new NTSB press release, below are some of the witness stats.

The Witness Group has received 349 accounts from eyewitnesses, either through direct interviews or through written statements. An initial summary of those statements follows:

· 52% specifically reported seeing a fire while the plane was in the air, with the fuselage being the most often cited location (22%). Other areas cited as a fire location were the left engine, the right engine or an unspecified engine, and the left wing, the right wing or an unspecified wing.
· 8% specifically reported seeing an explosion.
· 20% specifically reported seeing no fire at all.
· 22% reported observing smoke; 20% reported no smoke.
· 18% reported observing the airplane in a right turn; another 18% reported observing the airplane in a left turn.
· 13% observed the airplane "wobbling," dipping" or in "side to side" motion.
· 74% observed the airplane descend.
· 57% reported seeing "something" separate from the airplane; 13% reported observing the right wing, left wing or an undefined wing separate; 9% specifically reported observing no parts separate.

hum, AA 587 crashed after takeoff from JKF into a grouping of houses. All aboard the A300-600R died and so did some people on the ground. Rudder seperation occured after the plane encountered wake-turbulence.

No reason yet for why the tail seperate, but the above numbers are terribly interesting in the difference of stories people have when they are called as eye-witnesses.

Being from New York and familiar with JFK takeoff and landing patterns, there is no way the plane was making a right turn that day. It took off from RWY 31R that day and all flights which take off from that runway immediately bank left after take-off. I wonder what the 18% who saw a right turn were seeing.

It most likely means a right turn after the plane had departed and already made the initial left turn

Oh ok. Sorry. I know what you are talking about. So AA and the FAA don't know what caused the accident?

Obviously, eyewitnesses are no good when it comes to aircraft accidents.
Most people say that "there was a big explosion", or "the aircraft fell apart mid-air", or "the aircraft came down" (my favourite one).
