Unruly Passenger Causes Emergency Landing At BOS

Thu Jun 06, 2002 12:43 am

Looks like another freak has caused an airliner to make an emergency landing. CNN reports that an airliner flying to Cancun had to divert to Boston Logan Airport due to an unruly passenger. The news showed footage of a man being removed from the plane by police. The airliner was escorted to landing by two F-16 fighters.

IMHO, besides serving jail time, people like this should be made to pay all of the costs associated with the diversion, from fuel and time lost to the airline, to the cost of the military having to scramble F-16s or whatever aircraft to escort the plane, to compensation for passengers' inconvenience. And maybe, rather than serving a jail sentence, a better idea would be for perpetrators to have to work for free for the airline they were flying for a certain amount of time. This sort of behaviour has to stop, and I don't think the law provides sufficient penalties for it.

CNN further quoted "The man aparently woke up in a bad mood, and started harrassing the passenger next to him. He was intoxicated." Seems more incidents occur because of drunk people on planes than anything else.

I see that Turin_airport has posted about this, as well. CNN didn't report what airline it was, only that it was a Boeing 777.

It seems airlines like to unload nasty passengers in BOS (remember the guy with the bombs in his shoes?). Oh well, the State Police will be happy to arrest another one. Did CNN say where the flight was coming from?

Isn't there a FBI headquarters in Boston and that's why they are "dropped off" there? Glad to see everyone is ok.

I saw TV footage of the plane at the gate on Boston's noon news telecast. The video was from the air, and I thought it was a 767-300. But that is pretty cool that it was a 777. As for Boston getting these unscheduled visits, the folks up in Bangor, Maine thought they had a cottage industry all to themselves (well, almost all to themselves...Gander chimes in with some visits).

I wonder if it's going to be a matter of time before no alcohol is served on flights. I have heard the altitude causes you to absorb it quicker into your blood stream, which gets people plastered a lot quicker. As well, people have nothing to do but drink, which can get ugly pretty quick
Someday, we'll look back at this, laugh nervously, and then change the subject.

Eliminating alcohol in the aircraft won't stop all the problems. On my last flight to Cancun, following a 4-hour delay, almost everyone was intoxicated before we even left the airport from alcohol purchased at the airport. Several passengers were passed-out by the time we landed.

I wonder if airlines are serious about eliminating in-flight alcoholic drinks. This situation may boost consideration...thanks!

The guy on this 777 was a few sandwiches shy of a picnic. He ends up disrupting today's flight after doing the SAME thing on the flight down last week. What an Einstein! And to top it off, he had Cocaine in his posession. What a loser.

I saw the CNN news footage. It looked like they had him tied up in a straitjacket. But it may just be my eyes. They threw him into the cop car.

Whoever thinks this guy should work for the airline Free is on crack. That would allow him to see different parts of the world for free also. Sober up dude, and come back when you are.

I'd say the real "Einstein" is Air Europe, for letting this moron fly back from CUN after he acted up on the way down.

Yeah, that it!! That is on the his charges with posession of cocaine and inferr with the flight crew. I knew that about the guy were got a harassed with the one of passengers in the aircraft. And got to said here it is:

BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) -- A Europa Airlines flight traveling from Cancun to Rome was diverted to Logan International Airport at Boston on Wednesday morning because of an unruly passenger, authorities said.

That passenger, who had to be tied down, was being detained at state police barracks at the airport for questioning by the FBI, according to Massport officials.

Flight 2065, with 300 passengers and a crew of 13 aboard, landed at the airport at 9:10 a.m. EDT.

The pilot declared an emergency and the Boeing 777 was escorted to its landing by two F-16 fighter jets, officials said.

An FBI spokeswoman said the man could face charges for his behavior.

The man, she said, " woke up in a foul mood. He appeared intoxicated, harassed the passenger next to him and was then subdued and tied down."

That is on the reports to said from the man to her. Well, you might will have to read this a news from CNN.com and I did found that on the internet as for myself. And he could get penaly in 20 years of the state prison. So goodnight!!

You can't stop drunks on planes. I was on a Thai flight from Seattle to Tokyo where the passengers drank up all of the airline booze and then started passing around their own half-gallon jugs. Whoo-eee, the Japanese are a lot of fun!  Nuts

I doubt you're going to see this guy go to prison for very long, if at all. It was pretty funny watching him being drug down the stairs like a captured animal and slung in the back of a police vehicle, serves him right. As far as making the guy "work for the airline", If it was my airline, I wouldn't want this guy NEAR my customers, employees, and aircraft ever again.

Clarification

Thu Jun 06, 2002 2:22 pm

No, no, no...if this moron were to be forced to work for the airline in question as punishment, it would have to be a crap job. Something like counting leftover food trays from off-loaded catering, or greasing the rollers on baggage carousels. Nothing fancy like customer service, actual baggage handling or being allowed near an aircraft, for sure!
