I can understand the MD-11, but why was there a Delta 727 in this shot?

DL had an extensive intra European network from the FRA hub in the early to middle nineties.

VIE, ATH, LED, OTP to name just a few. At that time, they were number two at FRA behind LH. They inherited these routes from PA. The routes were given up because code sharing on AF equipment ex CDG made these flights on their own metal obsolete.

I was on a FRA-ATH-FRA flight in 1994, DL20 and DL24; a/c was an A310 on both ways, though.

Hi,
there was a time where DL flew with more 727s to/from FRA.
I think that I have a pic from FRA with 3 or 5 DL B727 on it.
perhaps those 727s make domestic flights, or european shorthaul flights To build up a german airline industrie.

Any ideas those FRA-spotters???

greetz,
jan

Before 1989 only allied airlines were allowed to fly to Berlin (US, GB, France and USSR). Lufthansa and other airlines could not fly to Berlin. DL had a wide European network with flights to Berlin. They also had two 727 at Zurich airport for Berlin flights.

You can fly any airliner over the atlantic. Either with stops or with additional tanks. Remember, in older days, airlines used e.g. DC 4 or 6 over the atlantic and they had less range than a 727.

Delta did not get flights to Berlin through the Pan Am Atlantic Division purchase. Pan Am sold the IGS (Internal German Service) to Lufthansa, LH taking over Oct1990. After the Berlin Wall came down nothing more could stop LH from derving Berlin. Previously only Air France, British Airways, and Pan Am could serve Berlin from other German cities. TWA also began service to Berlin and other German cities with 727's, after the Wall came down, basing the operation at Frankfurt as well.

Delta took over PA's Atlantic Division November 1991. Delta's flights at the FRA operation included Athens, Bombay, Budapest, Delhi, Istanbul, Moscow, Prague, Vienna, and Warsaw, according to the Nov91 timetable.
