Largest Airport Your Plane Has Landed At

Thu Jun 06, 2002 12:21 pm

With all these "small runways, long haul flights" and "Largest Aircraft Your Airport Has Ever Seen" flights, i decided to do this.

What is the largest airport you have flown into? Flown into as in you were the pilot of the flight. Large could be the longest runway you used or an international airport that has 100,000 passengers.

I have flown a Cessna 172 into Midway (MDW) and have flown into LAX in a King Air.

I've flown into Moses Lake, Washington in my skipper. MWH is one airport that has a major JAL training facility for 747's, and also is a place where many airplane manufacturers test their aircraft... Boeing, the new ERJ

There wasn't anybody behind me (I don't think) but an AA F100 had to hold short for me! Wonder what was going through his mind?

I've flown into Orlando INTL (MCO) although it wasn't all that busy. Probably the busiest airports I have been into are Dallas Addison, Ft. Worth Meacham, or Houston DWH.

I once did the ILS for 25R at LAX at about 3:30am on the way home from Palm Springs. Didn't touch down, though -- just missed and got vectored over the hill to VNY (it was a beautiful VFR night where you could see for miles). Landed at various major airports in the western US.

By far, though, the coolest place I've ever gotten to land at (and I think I got to do it 4 or 5 times that day) was PMD, a/k/a USAF Plant 42. Flew up there in a PA28 for Antelope Valley Career Day in 1997 and volunteered to fly 3 kids at a time around the pattern. Nothing like being at the intersection and hearing "2116Z, hold short of 7 for departing Stealth bomber."

One day I really want a chance to land at EDW but I suspect that, post 9/11, that opportunity will never arise.

Thanks. It's good to hear that people like to fly into large airports.

The busiest i've been to in my 152 was to Richmond Intl. for my solo cross country durig the afternoon rush. It was a great airport to larn about complexairspace, complex ATC instructions, avoid wake turbulence, and etc. as while in line for take off, a Delta MD-88 was in front of me and a TWA 717 was behind me, as I used special precaution from the MD88s wake.

I'm planning on flying to IAD and sometimes to DCA to shoot some "river visual" approaches during non-rush hours whenever general aviation aircrafts are allowed back in.

I did my private training out of Tucson International. That is in Class C airspace. That airport has a mix of 737s, A320s, 757s, DC-9s and MD-80s usually. They also have 80 F-16s from the AZ AnG based there. Also, TUS the occasional widebody visitors: A340 from Saudia Arabia, retiring L1011s, and actually saw a NWA 741 or 742 actually at the gate. That was a pretty ideal airport.
