Aircraft With Loudest Cabin/engines

Thu Jun 06, 2002 11:30 pm

Airbus Industrie claims that its A340 has the quietest cabin in the sky. Well I'm wondering, what do you think is the loudest cabin in the sky(or what do you think are the world's loudest commerical aircraft engines?)?

Of all the planes that I have flown on, I believe that the DC-9 has the loudest cabin. I flew on a Northwest DC-9-30 from MSP to IAD and sat right next to the engine. The engine was so loud that my eardrums nearly shattered! Throughout the flight, I could barely hear the person seated next to me talk since the engines were so freaking loud!

I agree, the DC9 is really loud if you're seated close to the engines. I've never been in the back of a MD80, so I don't know if it has improved. Another very very loud plane is the 777, it really annoys me on longer flights.

I totally agree with you, once I flew on an Aeropostal DC-9-32 and I seated next to the right engine; I just couldn't believe how noisy it was (specially when the thrust reversers were applied)!

Complainers  Smile

Just put a pair of ear seal things (Do they have a name?), put a blind fold on, and get some sleep.  Smile

But use those engines are loud, but thats why they made ANR.

I flew on an American MD80 and sat about 6 rows infront of the engine and didnt have any problems with the noise levels, I believed they were somewhat typical. Airbus A320 is probably the loudest plane I've been on but somehow it is my favorite (well, the A320 family is my favorite...any Airbus is my favorite).
Boeing wise, the loudest plane I was on would probably be the 727 because quite frankly, they are very loud. However, the 767 is a very comforting aircraft and cabin noise is minimal.

From a personal standpoint, I prefer the noiser plane. Its a constant reminder of my most passionate hobby.

The BAe 146 has a quite loud cabin too.

BTW, it's my 100th post here !

The 737-200 is quite loud if you sit near or behind the engine!

I flew on a NW 727 last month and was seated only a couple rows up from the engine. I was pleasantly suprised how quiet it was. I judge cabin noise by how loud I have to turn up my cd player to hear it. The back of the 727 was comparable to over the wing on the 757. The DC-9 was fairly loud at the back, but nothing rediculous.

I find the 737-800 to have a particularly loud cabin. Great airplane though.

Wow. I think that A340 has louder engines than the 777 does. I have flown on both, both in the cabin and both jumpseat during cruise. I say the A340 is loud. The 777 engines just seem to purr while the A340 engines kind of growl and whine. And yes the DC-9 is loud.

No, it has not. In December last year I have flown from MXP to DUS on AZ with an M82. Lucky me because I have sat in business class. During the flight I walked to the rear lavatories and I could not believe how annoying noise it was there.

I find the 320 to be particularly loud at cruise. This has been a sympton regardless of cabin seating position.

RR powered 757s can have a tendency to have a very sublime roar, one which has a tendency to grow on longer flights.

I would be hard pressed for someone to find a louder aircraft than the Jetstream 31. The Garretts are, in my book, the loudest engines ever fitted to a passenger aircraft in the past 30 years.

I thought Aeroflot's A300 was quiet, but the loudest so far is unquestionably the Fairchild Aerospace 228. It's _very_ loud.

I flew DC-8's (as a passenger) in the 60'ies.
Those engines were loud (AND I LOVED IT).
In those days you could talk about "loud engines".
I think todays aircraft are a marvel of environmental friendliness.

Somebody should take a ride in a Jetstream or a Brasilia to find out what real noise is. The vibrations make even the cabin annoucements inaudible! As far as jets go the DC-9 is pretty darn loud as well.

For some reason, I'm always seated right next to the engine, whether it be the DC-9 (way too loud), the MD-80 (loud), or the 717 (much quieter). I was once seated in the last window row ( there is one more row w/o a window) on a Hawaiian Air 717, and it did not bother me too much, besides the fact that when I looked out the window, the only scenery I could see was the engine, making me miss out on seeing a Hawaiian sunset from the air. I've sat many times in the rear of MD-80's and DC-9's, and their engines are way too loud, and they make the entire rear fuselage/cabin rattle throughout the flight.

BEEP BEEP BEEP!!!!!! I AM SORRY, But The Boeing 717 has the quietest Cabin that I know of. You can sit right in front of the engine, and talk...TALK to the person right next to you and in the seat across from you.

The Death Cruiser-9 is a different story though. DAMN that thing is loud

I've gotta say the loudest I've ever been on were:

1. DC-9-30, row 15

2. DeHavilland Dash-8 (anywhere)

3. Beech 1900D (anywhere)

I think the ARJ-85 was actually relatively quiet in comparison to those three.

The 747-200 is extremely loud next to the engines.

The A340 is quieter than the 777, I have flown both and the A340 is quieter.

I thought the A320 was quite quiet, the B767 is noisy in comparison to the A330.

the loudest I have been on was a Fokker 50 about 4 years ago from EMA to AMS. It was noisy on takeoff, but not so bad in cruise.

I think the wind makes alot of difference as well.

flying a Cessna 150 for 3 hours without headsets hurts a lot too...but that's not an airliner, so I guess it's out of contest....I have yet to fly on an airliner but from the outside, loudest I've seen are DC-9s and 707s

I would have to say the Convair 990!

That thing could give the Concorde a run for it's money!

I would also say that some of the older Gulfstream II's are pretty dam loud too. Same for the Lear 10,15s

I flew a USAirways Shuttle from LGA to BOS back when they were still operated by 727's. I sat in row 26 about 7 rows in front of the engine, and it was so loud a got a headache. Also, when at Mets games at Shea Stadium, the loudest planes to fly over have always been 727's.
