Fri Jun 07, 2002 3:56 pm

I just saw this in Discovery Channel last day.
They said that a major airline would save like 10.000 dollars by taking one olive from each meal !!!!!!!!!. that's awsome!!!!!!!!.

Not too surprising. If a major airline now serves 1 million meals a year containing more than one olive (so they can remove one without removing all olives  Smile/happy/getting dizzy ) and an olive costs $0.01 (not a bad assumption), you have a $10.000 saving.
As most of the majors serve a lot more than a million meals a year, they can save $10K even with a discount on the olives  Wink/being sarcastic

Just to mention that 10k$ is not that much in the airline business when you imagine that there are plenty of airline who are losing up or even more than 1 million a DAY!

I think the airline in question is American. Ex-CEO Robert Crandall was always trying to find ways to save money. I think I remember reading about it in a history book about AA. This sounds similar to the story behind AA's color scheme (Polished aluminum fueselage instead of a completely painted airplane which saves weight, which in turn saves in annual fuel costs)

I was reading in the book THE AMERICAN EAGLE, by Dan Reed, (or was it some other book) that American Airlines actually did such a study. In the 70's or 80's it saved American $100,000. That was in the money of that era. It is worth a lot more now. By reducing olives from 5 to 4 they saved.
