Bwia To Zrh?

Sat Jun 08, 2002 2:25 am

Swiss travel magazine "Travelinside" reports that BWIA could be a new operator to Zurich. One weekly flight would make sense and the big travel companys like Kuoni seems to be interested.....The would be great!!!
Is there any chance for such a flight, what do you think?

This would be great. Wasn't BWIA already at ZRH many years ago?

Yes, in the 90's they flew once weekly (on Saturday) with its L-1001-500 to ZRH...

However, it will most probably be an A340-300 operating these flights as they're replacing its L-1011-500s by A340-300s this summer.

Would be great to have 'em back, especially if it is a freshly painted A340

If it does start up, would it possibly be an extension of the new MAN flight or non-stop?

Yes BWIA would re start that route so that they can efficently use the 2 340 300 they have acquired. If traffic on the route pics up it is possible that they would offer a driect flight from the caribbean pos bgi zhr. However i think it might be an extension of the pos bgi lhr flight as that was what use to take place when they operated that route before.

The 340s are being leased for 5 years I hope that at the end we might see a switch to the 777.

BWIA back in Zurich - they did fly that back in the 1980s and early 90s but dropped the route in 1993 due to low profitability. It would be interesting to see how they do now - but a link with a tour operator would help in this regard.

I wonder when the route will be started if these plans are true as we know BWIA and their plans. I think that it might be profitable as the Caribbean Hotels are currently trying to get occupancy rates back to an acceptable level. I think this is th eperfect time for the airline enphasining their safety record which I think is munmber one in the world.

Have seen the article but the only thing which indicated that BWIA could fly again into ZRH was the title it self. The rest was only "general" talks and details. I don't think it was something serious at all...

But as I said earlier the airline cannot utilise the 340s efficently just on the Uk route alone so it might be ture. The airline is also in a phase of expansion which is being hampered by the fact that the airline base Trinidad is graded at cat 2.

You are right, the TI article are normaly not rumours but this one I'm not sure at all, as I said, the only thing that indicated such a thing was the title it self, not the text.

When BWIA served ZRH earlier with their L1011, where did they fly else in Europe, beside LHR?

BWIA will be flying to manchester. Since BWIA cut service to Zrh it restructured its fleet. Wide bodies are now 2 instead of 4 so they primarily serve the trans atlantic routes and as the airline is upgrading to 340s to use them efficently they need to have between 10-12 flights per week (i think but i know for sure that they need to do more operations with the 340s than the current 1011s) The Uk route both from manchester and lhr will not bring enough traffic to fully utilise the 340s thus the re estalishment of zhr route.
