What Is Going On Here? Test

Sat Jun 08, 2002 11:29 pm

The engineer above is doing certification testing on the Dornier 728. Can you tell me what he is testing?

Here is the Ex-Large Photo link. If your brower supports it, the photo can be blown up very large.

Maybe a bar connecting the front part to the thing that holds onto the wheel?

All I can think of would be some sort of shock/strut compression test for the gear, or maybe a test of the retraction motor/mechanism.

Just a W.A.G on my part, I really don't have a clue!

My guess is that he is testing something with the nose wheel to see if it give enough leway on touch down.

hes probably not testing big structural design stuff, like: will the wheel fit? That would have been done during developing of the a/c. My guess is he's testing the Communication interface for the ground crew.

All incorrect so far.

Hint: it happens on taxiing and at high speeds.

This is in fact vibration testing. The nose strut will be tested through all degrees of extension for vibration while hydraulics are applied by use of the test stand you see in the background. The unit that is attached to the nose wheel assy hub will simulate this vibration by use of a DC motor exerting simulated loads. The wires are part of the vibration analysis equipment designed to measure the IPS or (inches per second). IPS are also also for the standard of measure on engine vibration equipment.
