Is KLM Planning To Fly To EZE And Gig?

Sun Jun 09, 2002 11:46 am

Not sure if they ever flew there, but are there any plans for KLM to fly to Buenos Aires and Rio?

I don't know anything about GIG, but KL used to fly to EZE a couple of years ago, but they stopped flying due to economical reasons.

KLM used to fly to GIG, but don't count on GIG returning in the KLM network soon.

KLM did fly to Buenos Aires but terminated service to save costs. The yeild on the route were not great, and was an extension of KL's services to Brazil so it was not very popular with business travellers. Its also expensive for the 747 to continue on with a small load of pax.

When Argentina's financial crisis is worked out, KL may return to EZE, with a continuing service to SCL, if it could be operated on a nonstop basis out of AMS; this route could be served with KL's new 777s, which would be more effecient to operate on this route than the 744s.

That's right, I can't imagine yields were that great, given other rival airlines (AF, BA, LH, IB and AZ) operate non-stop flights to EZE, and the first three offer 3 classes of service on these flights. Both AF and BA are now operating 777s on their respective routes to EZE. AF and LH continue to operate the extension to SCL, whereas IB flies a dedicated non-stop service to SCL from MAD.

BA no longer flies to SCL, but pax flying to SCL change planes at EZE, where fellow Oneworld alliance member Lanchile has an a/c waiting next to the inbound BA 777, when it arrives in the morning.

In a local newspaper last year (La Nacion) it was mentioned that KLM asked the Argentinean government to increase its frequencies from three to five. One more was given in early 2000 but the other denied. The company then implemented the cost reduction plan Baseline and Buenos Aires and Sydney were cut. After the royal wedding between Willem Alexander and Maxima, the gov. of Fernando de la Rua sent the secretary of tourism to the Netherlands and offered KLM that it would not be a problem to obtain the frequencies they want including daily services from AMS to EZE.

After the devaluation, cost are of course lower but now demand is the problem from Argentina.

Perhaps one day they may return if the situation stabilizes and use a B777.
