Help! AA No PTVs In Coach On 777?!

Mon Jun 10, 2002 5:45 am

Is this true? On their website it has the following seating chart:

For Atlantic Flights.I'll be flying AA from Heathrow-LAX on the 4th of July. The chart shows "Video Monitors" ??? What are those supposed to be?
And then there are black dots on most of the seats, but only some in coach...I don't get it...
There MUSt be ptvs, any airline that buys new 777s would have them, it would be retarded not to...

How is it retarded?

Erm....perhaps, and this is only a stab in the dark, but perhaps they're video monitors?

There are video monitors and PTVs. The monitors can ensure that everyone can see emergency videos, and anything AA wants everyone to see. Some PTVs (at bulkheads, some in busines etc) fold away so you can't rely on them if you want to someone everyone something.

AA does have PTV's on all 777 and some A300 aircraft.

The large vieo monitors are for things such as a safety demo or AirShow.

Hope that helps!

I know 777236ER, you think I'm a moron...ok ...

 Sad

It would be retarded because almost EVERY airline that buys new aircraft, (777/A330) gets PTVs, they're almost standard...You can compete without them. UA, CO, Delta all have 777s with PTVS...

I understand those are video monitors.  Smile

For christ sake you don't need PTV's for a long haul flight, read a friggin book. On the A300, there are no video monitors so the f/a's have to do the demonstration by hand.
fold away so you can't rely on them if you want to someone everyone something.
This way they can show connection information, safety demonstrations etc. etc.

Smile I meant, if you wanted to show every passenger a video then you can't rely on PTVs as some fold away.

My god, it is as if people don't even want to fly an airplane without PTVs...
We are all airplane nuts (hence airliners.net NOT ptv.net)
Just get over it-and like many others have said, read a book

Well, for the record, American's 777s do have PTVs in coach. Delta's are set up similarly, with PTVs as well as overhead video monitors.
It's a new day. Every moment matters. Now, more than ever.

Sleep, watch the inflight movie on the mainscreen, look out the window, eat, talk to your neighbor, talk to a flight attendant, join the mile high club, peer through the curtains to biz class.

Just a few things to think about doing with out PTVs. Anyone got any others.

How about breaking out the crayons and applying them on a spiffy coloring book? I have actually done this before and it kills time like nothing else. Sure the other passengers on the Upper deck going to Sydney gave a few strange looks, but hey it killed time! Also play cards, stare out the window and just think always seems to be one of the best things to do as well. And if your still so upset that you don't have a PTV do yourself a favour and sit there and rot in your seat. If the above suggestions don't work for someone without a PTV, I feel sorry for them!

Play gameboy, call a friend... the list is infinate.
Look at a magazine, Read the newspaper, walk down the aisles counting people...

You don't need PTV's. I often flew SWissair SFO-ZRH on the MD-11's with no PTV's. Its just fine. I will be flying AA SFO-JFK-ZRH this summer with no PTV's. PTV's are sooooo overrated. They are not as good as everyone makes the out to be.

PTV's are there because passenger entertainment demands them. A lot of pax like them including me. On a 12 hour transatlantic flight, i need them desperately, for how long can you sleep/read a magazine/talk to your neighbour or just stare into the back of the seat in front of you? Maybe 3 hours,4 hours,5 hours or even 6 hours, but after that? that's where the PTV's come in handy, you can fiddle about with them. Anyway, why pay $600 for a flight that hasn't PTV's when u can have them on another flight?

ILUV767 has the best idea -- join the mile high club Big grin.

I also agree with ILOVEA340 -- I've used the PTV's on both DL and BA -- they're very cool, but they grow old after awhile...

The best thing about PTV's is the airmaps, at least you can see what route your plane is taking, which is quite fun to be honest.

The need for the ptv appeared when the first ptv's were introduced. But before that there were very long flights without the ptv. What did you do then?
Well, I just read, talked to FA's and slept. And that was for a lot of years. Yet I enjoyed flying and I didn't need the ptv.... You should get used to flying without ptv's, because you'll be in flights on airlines without such high standards of entertainment, and you'll die!

Seriously, what's the big deal? Some people like PTVs, some don't, but there is no reason for those who don't to criticise people who like them by telling them to "read a book". The same way that some people don't like PTVs, others don't like reading books.

First of all, the black dots represent powerport locations. It WOULD be retarded to put PTVs on select coach seats. So don't worry about that, Leftseat86. Airlines do not need to provide PTVs, tho they are nice to have. They should have an inflight entertainment system. AA's MD-80s don't, but the 757s do. This means if you fly to DFW from LGA on a 757 you get a movie. Go from JFK and you don't. But that means you get a choice. If you were so concerned about PTVs you should have asked before you paid your fare  Smile

Cmk10, Arsenal@LHR and Olympic A-340:

I noticed you like to use God and Christ in your replies. Is there something theologically profound about PTVs on a 777? Or are you all just a part of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood?

It seems some people only read books on flights, that explains why it is their first argument against PTVs...Suddenly books turn into something special for them...

I read many books during a year, for my studies or just for fun. But I still love PTVs...all the arguments and the seemingly hard battle of all the PTV-opponents just make me  Yawn  Yawn  Yawn

Maybe some people should fly more often, they would probably read two books a year instead of one...

I'm used to UA...channel 9 + window seat + Moving Map =  Love  Love  Love

I have stuff to read, but The flight goes faster with PTVs...I used to fly AF 744s without them, and like 31inch seat pitch!  Sad

Tsentsan,

So? What relevance does that have? It's not like AA asks Boeing to make PTV's for them...

and it's not like Boeing decides whether AA has PTV's in economy or not...

The Coachman Sir,

I was referring to leftseat86's comment that "There MUSt be ptvs, any airline that buys new 777s would have them, it would be retarded not to..."

So what I'm trying to say is that not ALL airlines who buy 777s would have PTVs in them.

Its an option, and unfortunately Thai did not take that option.

Fine, you're the expert mate.
BTW, I was referring to their 777-300s.
They're short haul enough to go to SYD and AKL.

If Thai services to Japan, Korea and Australia are short hauls, what are Jetblue's East Coast hops then?

Cathay, SIA and Malaysia all have PTVs on their B777s, and many of their regional services are shorter than TG's flights. It's time to move up for Thai...but as far as I know they have already decided on a major upgrade of all classes on their A330s, B777s and B744s.

Hmm....

well, I was thinking 772...and they're definitely short-haul...10-across in economy, their 773's have 9-abreast.

TG doesn't have all that much money...PTV's aren't exactly a priority, they need to shore up their core business and their place in the Star Alliance, SQ are breathing down their necks. TG don't like SQ being so close...

I guess, it's all the more reason to upgrade.

I have flown the AA 777s so far 5 RTs..fortunately I always got upgraded
into C class . I did take walks back there...and there are PTVs at every seat
Even the bulk head seats
The big public TV monitors are all marked on the seat map..and the dots :
an educated guess : public phones . It's the only logical explanation
( it's not handicapped seats , too many of them...it's not undesirable seats..)

Top 5 things to do if you don't have PTV on a long-haul flight:

#5. Do naughty things to yourself under the blanket.

#4. Do naughty things to your neighbor under the blanket.

#3. "Accidentally" press the F/A call button and apologize when he/she comes over.

#2. Tell horrible plane crash stories in a loud enough voice so that all surrounding passengers can hear you.

And the #1 thing to do if you don't have PTV on a long-haul flight:

Try to get that "Deep Vein Thrombosis" thingie by sitting as motionless as possible.

personally, i like PTVs. its something extra to do to pass the time and they allow passengers options - something extra than "beef or chicken..."

however, the only horrid thing about PTVs is when they break down. there is always 1 ptv that refuses to work and to be stuck on a 777 oceanic route being the only passenger without one would, well, suck.

To answer the question, yes, all AA 777s have PTVs. The video monitors are for the safety demonstrations. In flight, they usually show one of the movies on the screens, so you can look at the video monitor instead of your PTV, if you wanted to do that, for whatever reason...
