Gregjet,
Try doing a search on this. It's been covered many times, and someone actually gave a list for UAL I think it was, the top hourly pay for each plane for a captain. If I find it, I will post it here.

It does depend on the airline. Here in the UK pilots are paid a salary, then normally a flight duty allowance (hourly rate) on top of that.

My airline (UK charter) pays basic f/o salary of about £33,600 (US$49,000) up to about £51,000 (US$74,500) top-scale f/o. Then we also get a flight duty allowance of £2.34 (US$3.40) for every hour on duty in addition to the basic salary.

Captain salaries range from about £60,000 (US$87,600) up to about £83,000 (US$121,200) and they get a £2.50 (US$3.65) hourly duty allowance.

Also Line Traning Captains get an extra £6,000 (US$8,800) per annum and Base Traning Captains get an extra £16,500 (US$24,100) per annum on the basic salary.

So a top-scale Base Training Captain will be on about £99,500 (US$145,300) per year with an average 1,000 hours duty a year which carries an extra £2,500 (US$3,700), so over £100k. Unfortunately it takes about 25 years with the airline to get to that position!!

Hope this was of interest.

Rick.

I make 123 per flight hour as a 12th year 727 F/O. It works out to about 120K a year because I'm paid for 975 hours a year. I'm also away from home in the service of my company about 3100 hours a year...works out to 38.43 per hour.

De727ups,

"It works out to about 120K a year because I'm paid for 975 hours a year"

So am I right in thinking from that statement that the number of hours you actually fly is not relevant? They pay you that whether you do them or not?

Monarch,

"What about the tax? That must be heafty & bring your wages right down"

Tax! Don't even talk to me about tax!!

In the UK you get the first £4,535 of your salary tax free, then the amount between £4,535 and £6,415 is taxed at 10%, then the amount betwen £6,415 and £33,935 is taxed at 22% then any amount above £33,935 is taxed at 40%.

So if you earn £38,000 you will pay £7,868.40 per year tax. Then there's national insurance which would come to £2,537.60 meaning your tax liability in total is £10,406.00.

So your net income from £38,000 GROSS would be £27,954.00, or £2,299.50 per month. In other words just under 28% of your hard earned money goes to tax. The more you earn, the more you are taxed, as you are earning more at the 40% level.

Great place the UK huh?! Now where was that Emirates application form....

Worth noting also the above calculation assumes you pay no contribution into a pension scheme which most people do.

An absolute disgrace! My ambition is to be a pilot and I don't think it is fair to be taxed so much. Why Emirates Rick767, don't get taxed?

Starting salary is £38,000 for f/os and yes it's 100% tax-free. Add to that living in the warmth of Dubai, flying the 777 for a living, fully furnished accommodation, intrest-free £12,000 loan for a new car, free medical and dental health cover, free loss of licence / life / accident insurance, 100% reimbursement of childrens education, profit share bonus, 42 days paid leave per annum, £55 per hour for every hour flown in excess of 84 hours a month, minimum salary on promotion to captain of £54,700....

Just a few things really. All you need is 2,500 hours flight time, 1,000 of which must be multi-crew, multi-engined jet time.

And I've nearly got it!! yipeeee  Laugh out loud

Thank you very much, and I hope you get where you want to be too. The training is highly stressful (both emotionally and financially), but the job itself makes it worth it every day, however much I complain.

Sadly whatever career you choose in the UK you can't get away from our dreaded tax!!!  Insane

Rick,

We have a guaranteed 75 hours of pay per month no matter how much we actually fly. The freight business is unique in that you often fly into a hub (sort facility), sit around for 4 or 5 hours, and fly back out....often times you fly a lot less than passenger companies but have similar duty times. There are also trip rigs....you get paid 1 flight hour for every 3.75 hours of time away from base and duty rigs....where you get paid 1 flight hour for every 2 hours on duty. So...you have to look at actual flight time, time away from base, duty time, and the monthly guarantee...you get paid based on whichever one generates the highest numbers. On my equipment type (B727), we usually fly short legs....maybe an hour each way. Because of this my pay is not based on flight hours but on the monthly guarantee. If I flew trips with more time away from base (more days of work) or trips with long duty days then those rigs might come into play.

Rick,

Do you know much about CX or SQ's hiring practices? I'm a sophomore at Embry Riddle in Daytona Beach, FL, and I've just finished my PPL. With of course, aspirations of becoming a commercial pilot. How hard is it to get on with any of these three (the two above plus EK) as an American? I know you're brit, but do you have any idea? I'd really like to get a job flying for one of these carriers especially since you can get into the heavies a lot sooner, instead of in the USA, where it takes forever to get up there. Any info?

Starting FO pay at Mesaba is $18.21 an hour. FOs then top out after 4 years at $30.05 an hour. This is regardless of equipment, the saab or the avro. Captain pay for a 5 year captain on the saab is $48.81 and tops out after 14 years at $59.06/hr. Jet captain pay for a 5 year captain is $64.20 and tops out after 14 years at $83.77 We too have a minimum monthly guarentee of 75 hours. However we don't have trip and duty rigs. So if we're on duty 14 hours, which is very common, and only fly 4 hours, that's all we get paid for. We start getting paid when the door is closed and the breaks release and stop getting paid when the breaks are set and the door is opened. All the other hours we're at work, we're paid per diem of $1.35/hr. I just returned from a day trip followed by a 4 day trip. I flew a total of 20 hours but was gone for a total of 90 hours. I get paid for only those 20 hours I blocked. That's just one example. This is the reason for having trip and duty rigs.

There is a lot more to pilot pay the media would like you to believe. You only hear about the mainline senior pilots and their deserved wages. You never hear about the struggling commuter pilot that has to have 2 jobs to pay the bills because the wages are near poverty levels! It's rediculous.

As far as I know, it is very difficult for an American to work in a foreign country, especially as a pilot. Turbinebeaver, just get through riddle, pay your dues and earn your airline career the respectable way. Don't do out and buy your job! No need to be in such a rush.

TurbineBeaver,

I'm afraid an FAA license is no good at SQ unless you have 2000 hours experience as a Captain in aircraft such as a B747-400 or B777. To apply for a second officer position you will have to have a Singaporean, Malaysian, British, Australian or New Zealand ATPL.

SQ has their own cadet pilot program but its usually for Singaporean and Malaysian nationals only. Occasionally they will take 1 or 2 from India.

I'm from Western Australia. My local aerodrome Jandakot hosts the Singapore and China Southern airline flying schools. Cadets are selected from either country and are looked after with well equipped accomodation, full flight training up to twins and jets. I have never seen a foreigner at either school but I know Singapore airlines does hire Australian pilots. I have a scanner and often hear Aussie accents with the SQ flights out of Perth.

Goodluck all.
P.S Many of CX's pilots are Aussie to, most of then based in Hong Kong
