Why Is There No JFK-ORD Service?

Tue Jun 11, 2002 5:27 am

I was looking on Expedia today and found that Comair is the only carrier to serve JFK through ORD with 1 daily flight. There is currently service to HPN, EWR, and LGA on AA, CO, and UAL. I was just wondering why there isn't a market for it. Is it because ORD has enough international carriers and wouldn't need to fly to JFK for the international flights?

Good question, i was thinking that too. So there's no AA or UA flights into JFK from ORD?

JFK is not that much of a "regional" airport such as the other ones in the area. EWR and LGA have more than enough flights to ORD I would assume at least 60 between the two if not more. The Port Authority and the airlines for that matter want to focus that route with the other airports. I also will assume passengers would much rather fly from EWR and LGA to ORD.

North American Airlines operates the El Al service as a charter continuation of their service from Tel Aviv. They also serve Miami.

Once jetBlue opens up their JFK-ORD flight (I hope soon!), you'll see the other JFK carriers (probably AA first since they have a growing JFK hub) rushing into that route.

However, in terms of the present, the NYC-ORD route is highly traversed by business professionals. For a person based in NYC, or the close suburbs, the closest airport is LGA.

UAL flies ORD-JFK on Fridays and JFK-ORD on Sundays. It is because they need to get a plane over to JFK (320 or 752, I don't remember) to do the weekend JFK-SJU runs.

Frequentflier, does Jetblue have plans to fly from JFK-ORD that is interesting. I doubt AA would expand its JFK to ORD if B6 enters the market. They would make it more marketable to there Frequent Flyers to fly from LGA with more upgrade opportunities double miles and such. Remember the folks that live in NJ. LGA is the royal pain in the behind to get to from Jersey so EWR serves there purpose.

I am not surprised. Here are a few reasons:

-Both are major international markets, so one does not need to fly from ORD to JFK or JFK to ORD to get to their destination.

-LGA is much closer to Manhattan than JFK is, so LGA is more convenient for travelers.

I wouldn’t necessarily say that La Guardia is easier to get to. Have you ever tried driving the Grand Central Parkway during rush hour? It’s like moving through molasses. JFK is much more accessible to people living on Long Island, plus you have the tons of bus routes and the A train (if you dare to take it). The Q10 (I’m not talking about the express) doesn’t go through busy streets and I’ve never had problems when taking it from Kew Gardens to JFK. Driving on the van Wick, though, that’s another story.

The only reason I use La Guardia is because it’s a ten minute walk from my house. Public transportation to there is limited, making it difficult to get to and there are no plans to extend the subway or create a rail link there. Then the air train to Jamaica Station is completed, I think it will start becoming a more viable option for even domestic travelers. You’ll soon see more domestic flights there. Besides, the Port Authority has stated that it is the only airport in the region capable of expanding and handling more traffic.

I think JetBlue knows better than to go in to ORD. I mean, its like going in to the Lion's den, they're already at war with UAL and AA on transcons. I suspect MDW as a more likely candidate.

While it is definetly easier to get to JFK from LI, the majority of businesses in the tri state area are closer to LGA.

Also, saying that jetBlue will fly to ORD is speculation, but I meant to say that MDW could be a viable alternative. In my opinion, they will fly to Chicago.

Finally, if jetBlue flies to Chicago, AA will absolutely fly there as well. How about JFK-LGB as evidence.

It's not just ORD, compare the number of flights and size of aircraft that fly between JFK and BOS, DCA, ATL,PIT, DTW, IAH, DFW, CLT, etc and you will see little or no service from JFK to these cities.

The reason:

JFK is the hardest to get to from Manhattan, and it takes twice as long to get to JFK from Mid-Town as it does to get to EWR from Mid-Town even though they're the same distance.

JFK is for long haul and International flights.

Of the three NY airports (EWR,JFK,LGA) JFK has the smallest percentage of business travelers, business travelers are the folks who pay the big $$$ for air travel.

STT757 is right, it is not just ORD. I think American has 1 daily from DFW to JFK while it probably has 7 or 8 daily DFW flights to LGA.

Regarding Jetblue, I think ORD is not a wise choice, MDW would be better. At ORD, you have both of the world's largest airlines' hubs there and American and United will not be pleased to see Jetblue A320s at ORD. At MDW, you have Southwest and ATA, but in terms of hubsize, neither can compare to AA and UA over at ORD.

I'm surprised, then why is there BOS-EWR service? You can find most flights the same at BOS as well as EWR!
