UA 744s To Europe?

Thu Jun 13, 2002 10:40 pm

Didn't UA fly a 744 to LHR? I checked and it doesn't fly there anymore. Did they ever fly a 744 to FRA? Do the 744s just do domestic & pacific flights?

I flew a UA 744 from ORD to FRA in May 2001. We left ORD about 2PM and arrived at FRA about 5AM the next day. This was the smoothest landing I have ever experienced.

I thought they also had a ORD-LHR flight on a 744. Did you have CH9 on your FRA flight?

Jayhup is correct. In September 2000, I flew UA954, SFO-LHR on a UA 744. At that time, they had a daily 772 and 744. Unfortunately, the 744 is no more.

There were several LHR 74's last summer. ORD and IAD both had them. The IAD 74 went IAD-LHR-BOM-NRT-LAX-IAD I believe or was it HKG, well either way thats the idea. I flew the LHR-IAD and IAD-LAX legs.

The IAD 74 went IAD-LHR-BOM-NRT-LAX-IAD

UA does not have rights to BOM and have never operated into BOM

UA has served DEL when it operated RTW flights 1 & 2. It also went through HKG and not NRT.

Actually, at the moment, United is using a 747-400 (N127UA) to sub for several 777 and 763 flights to London, and 777s flights to Frankfurt, all from Washington IAD. I think the 744 will be doing IAD-FRA tonight, and for the next 3 days, then its fate at IAD is unknown.

UA is using 744's to LHR again i believe, donder10 mentioned it in another thread. i'll go and check it out, it'd be great if we see the 744's back again in europe. UA has 4 daily ORD-LHR flights, one of them has got to be a 744.

Last summer at this time of year SFO also had a 747-400 evening departure to LHR. United desperately needs to pull the 744 off these silly domestic routes and stick them on international flights where they belong. Already flights this summer to Asia, Europe, Australia/NZ are surprizingly full!

Why should United pull 744s off of domestic routes? Most of the time they are continuing on to an international destination or reposition flight. Plus United would rather fly a plane than let it sit for hours, which some airlines around the world do.

Every domestic 744 flight I've been on has had a packed gate area.... and the flight seemed to be packed, well at least in Business.. never flown in coach on a 747 in my life :P

UA will continue to sub 744s for 777s to Europe.. you'll see quite a few subs into FRA and LHR out of both LAX and ORD.

Why should United pull 747s from domestic routes you ask? The answer is quite simple... Profit! The majority of biz class on domestic flights seems to fill up mainly due to upgrades. Thats why biz class seems "full". It happens on all 3 class cabins on domestic routes. Just the other week I was flying a 777 from EWR to DEN. Biz class was wide open with 20 seats. Being a standby I figured I was all set for Biz class. Come to get my ticket with seat 1A I was more then surprised to find out 20 people upgraded from Economy! Happened once again on a 777 from IAD-DEN. Anyways... Those 747's could be pulling in ALOT more money doing international flights. Even if they do "sit for a couple hours". When those jets fly routes like SFO-HKG-SIN compared to a standard domestic routing like SFO-DEN-ORD-DEN, Those few extra hours on the ground for intl 747's make up in the most important thing $$$$. High yielding passengers is why it would be nice to see the 747-400 back on many international routes. I'm not saying the domestic 747s aren't doing well. But Domestic profit to Intl profit is comparing Night and Day don't you agree? Granted I may not be "Mr. Know it all" about airline operations, but a quick look over several different routes going over seas for this coming summer is a good indication for United that more 747's would do extremely well out there.

Soon your luck with non coach flying on 747s will run dry like mine did after 22 flights across the Pacific in biz class!  Pissed Enjoy it while it lasts!

HEADS UP

United has 3 daily ORD-LHR, not 4. The 4th will not be returning unless United states that it will be starting up another.

There were 4 in the past during the summer, however.

The UA 744 went LAX-IAD-LHR-DEL-HKG-LAX. As flights 1/2 E/W routing for an around the world. And right now out of IAD they are running 744's to cover for the major overbooking of the LHR flights this week and FRA next week.

actually, the 3rd JFK-LHR flight was sent to IAD.

In terms of thinking that "pacific" flights are high yield, yer totally wrong. Fares to Singapore in coach have been hovering between $500 to $600 USD... many people fly United to singapore JUST for the miles.. there's an entire thread with about 100 replies on it over at FlyerTalk.

United puts their 747s where they see fit, and MAYBE on a given day, 2 are flying strictly domestic routes.. but not too many. But my friends at ORD said the 3pm flight to LAX, which is a 744, goes out *full* all the time... although that doesn't mean it's making money, that's almost 400 connecting passengers for United.. better than 180 in a 757.
