I Love Being Delayed!

Fri Jun 14, 2002 12:09 pm

Whenever I am ready to board a flight, and there's a long delay, I actually enjoy it. When I was in JFK on the taxiway behind like 40 planes waiting at 4L for takeoff during severe thunderstorms at 11:50 PM, I loved every minute of it. Being delayed as an aviation enthusiast is really fun, it means valuable time for more pictures, more exploration time, etc. Who else enjoys being delayed!? I bet people would think I'm crazy when the read this!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Don't know if you travel much, but as a regular traveller I loath delays. Usually I'm flying home and it's dark so even if I wanted to look at the planes I couldn't and all I want to do is get back to MEL and drive the 50kms to my house.

I don't like it. But, when I am, then I just go to an airline club.

When I was but a wee child, I also enjoyed delays. Now I want to get off the airplane and into the confines of home, hearth and dog. Add in the several times a month that my best friend is in town (she flies too much) and all I want is to be home. Speaking of which, I need to clean up the pizza boxes and beer cans. Must look somewhat domesticated by tomorrow night.

I like long layovers, but I don't like delays, especially when they don't let people off the plane. With the long layover, you get to look at planes and stuff, but you don't have to hassle with going to the gate and stuff and waiting on the plane; it can be a royal pain sometimes.

Maybe you should check out my post: "Longest Day Ever Flying"

I think then you would find out my answer, though I do like looking around at the airport at the planes when we are delayed, if I'm not stressed out!!!

If I'm on vacation and don't really need to get to my destination at a particular time then I don't mid delays all that much. I wouldn't say I LOVE them but it doesn't really bother me. The way I look at it... it's kinda like volunteering my seat to the airline for compensation on a fully booked flight. I'll wait for a couple of hours.

But if it's on a flight where I have to be home at a certain time, then delays are my worst enemy. In fact, I can't even stand a minute delay in that situation. Of course, in that case, I love it when we leave arrive early.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

I like delays to a certain point, when It doesn't matter (i.e. the return flight home) I could care less.... the closest I got to a cancelled flight was a time in MSP when I was about to miss a connection due to being on a 3 hour late flight from LGA (Hmmm, go figure) and we almost had to stay overnight in MSP (not too many MSP-SMF flights at 7:00PM), but there were so many connecting passengers on my flight, they held the plane for us.... I was kind of pissed that I couldnt see the town of Minneapolis for a night (we would have had to catch the 9:00 flight the next day).... The only thing I hate about delays is the whole hassle of "I can't go anyplace and get there ontime.... always a delay." usually, yeah, im with you.

I like long layovers. I hate delays. With a layover I KNOW I have four hours to have fun. With a delay I need to stay near the gate in case they begin to board.

Staying by the gate doesn't bother me..... I could rest my eyes... or even better... stare at the plane or planes around my gate for hours on end... fine by me!

In case I don't have to catch my connecting flight at another airport or the delay doesn't cause me to miss my appointments, I don't care about "slight" (i.e. up to 2h) delays.
However, the times I thoroughly enjoy them are unfortunately over.
Although I always take my camera with me on business or leisure trips, I tend to stop over at the same airports over and over again, so the excitement of new and unknown movements I can capture during the delay has somehow diminished.

I prefer a long layover over a long delay, not a huge fan of delays.

I like long layovers in certain airports. For example, I would not mind having a long layover in HNL someday. That is a great airport. ORD is no fun for an extended layover- there are not many places to go sit and look at airplanes. Plus it usually is a zoo. The worst place I have seen for a long layover is Taipei. The main waiting area is a windowless room with nothing but a postal counter in it. The woman behind the counter was asleep. You cannot see much aircraft movement from the gate areas either. I was disappointed.

Since I sit in coach almost always, long ground delays are usually no fun at all.

Whenever I fly I always try to get the earliest flight to the connecting city. That way I can walk around and look at the planes.

When I was coming back from Tech School in April I flew from Biloxi-ATL on Delta Connection. And I was going to fly on Delta Connection from ATL-CLE so I didn't have to switch terminals. I had like a couple hours until my flight left so I walked to the one end of C concourse (I believe) and watched the planes land and take off. It was great. A great site to see when you've been away at Basic Training and Tech School past the past 3 1/2 months.

Then my sister and I went to Rome this past December. we had a 5 hour lay over in Newark. She was annoyed but I wasn't. I like the hustle of the people in the airport. Of course our flight got delayed then I got annoyed because I wanted to leave. :p

Delays always just mean broken working schedule, or almost as bad, lost free time. It's just plain miserable like lost baggage and all such bad things.

In addition it means staying unwillingly at one of the world's most uncomfortable places, a noisy airport transit hall. Most prisons are far more comfortable, and normally you will know when you get out of a prison.
Always keep your number of landings equal to your number of take-offs

Well, next time you are delayed at MSP, go to the smallest concourse I think it's called D, and there'll be an observation deck. You get a PERFECT view the runway!
