Do You Like The Look Of Winglets?

Sun Jun 16, 2002 8:53 pm

I love it, especially Airbus winglets, they're really elegant.
I don't like 737NG winglets.

For your information, the official term for Airbus A310,A318,A319,A320,and A321 is...Winglets.For the A330,A340,B737,B747,MD-11,and the TU-204,they are called Wing Tip Fences.
This seems logic as they have a fence shape comparing with the small winglets !!!

An aircraft looks much better with winglets/wing tip fences  Wink/being sarcastic
I don't like the 737NG winglets too, they're too big.
I love the A320 winglets, but my favourites are A330/340 winglets: they make the plane look more elegant.
The 747 400 looks much better thanks to his winglets too.

Will the 380 have winglets, wing tip fences or nothing at all?

All the images show it with small winglets, but I'd like it to have wing tip fences.

I have read that the A300/A310/A318/A319/A320/A321 have, what are called, "Wing tip fences" and anythign else (A330/A340) are called winglets like on the 747-400. If I'm wrong, then I guess you learn something new every day.

will they possibly add theraked wingtips as on the 764 to the A380?
maybe on a larger version? or wil the plane become too big for airport taxiways e.t.c?
I love planes with wingtips, i love the look of the A340/A340 and the MD-11 is one of my favourite planes to look at.i also hate the lookof the large 737NG wingtips.

f.pier - all the A380 images I've seen show it either with nothing, or wingtip fences - no winglets. Where can I see these images with small winglets?

Airbus_A340 - yes you are right. Actually, I believe wing tip fences are a sub category of winglets (correct me if I'm wrong)

I haven't understood if 330/340/744 have winglets or wing tip fences.

320 has winglets or wing tip fences?

I guess I am the only one who loves the Winglets on the 737NG. They are pretty big but they sure look nice in flight. If the 747-400 and the 737-800 have them, the 767 has the raked wingtips, the 777-300ER will be getting the raked tips, why none on the 757-300?

Yep, I love winglets/wingtip fences. They make the plane more elegant. The 737NG, Embraer 170 and Envoy 7 winglets however don't look nice, 737 & Envoy 7's are too big, Embraer 170 look very strange.

Yeah, Aircraft overall look better with winglets, even the 727. I least like the B737 with winglets, because they look kinda stupid.

Air Europa 737 looks good with wing fences/winglets though:

If anyone has the chance to see the 727 with winglet...do it..they look really sharp on the aircraft. I love those Pan Am III B727's with the winglets.

Depends on the plane for me. I like the winglets on the A330 and A340, 744.

But I HATE the look of the 737NG's winglets.

Airbus_A340:
Thanks for informing us. I always referred to them as double winglets, didn't know they were called wing tip fences. I almost always learn something new on airliners.net everyday!

I prefer the look of the winglets rather than the wing tip fences especially on the 747, MD-11, A330 & A340, they really add that element of gracefulness in the design. That's especially the case with the 747 because of its unique characteristics. The winglets on the 737 just don't look good, not on an aircraft of that size & it'll take a while to grow on me.
