Lufthansa To Buy The SIA A343s?

Tue Jun 18, 2002 5:27 am

According to www.a340.net, LH considers to buy the remaining A340-300s from Boeing Aircraft Trade previously owned by Singapore Airlines.

The aircraft are owned by Boeing, it has nothing to do with SQ.

Considering the aircraft are still in service with Singapore Airlines, it would be illogical to think that they have nothing to do with SIA.

I think it would be nice to sell to Lufhansa considering they're in the Star Alliance. But, why would they want second hand aircraft anyway?

Have heard that this rumour has been denied. AFAIK Lufthansa seems to be close to convert the existing A343 options into orders for the A330-200/300. However I still see a slim chance that LH will take those A340s from Boeing - but Boeing has to go bottom-low with its prices.

Nothing to do with SQ I think. Those A343s are fully owned by Boeing now.

Well they are operated by SIA and I don't particularly think SIA care who they go to as long as they are gone somehow.

Now a change, at the orders group it is reported that this rumour (or however you want to call it) was announced during a Lufthansa Investors (?) meeting only a few days ago. This could cover short-term capacity gaps and would allow LH to increase operations at its Munich hub faster than expected plus potentially a few additional long-hauls out of FRA. And this could be a part-replacement of the A340-200s. Let´s see and wait, how manyof the SIA ships are still available? Maybe this is the surprise LH was talking about a few months ago.

"how manyof the SIA ships are still available?"

According to http://www.boeing.com/commercial/airtrade/reports/other.html, Boeing still has 11 A343s.

That would be a smart way to acquire these relatively low-cycle, well-maintained aircraft. Didn't LH buy an A310 or 300-600R from Emirates recently? They are sensible and buy used aircraft when it is appropriate and economical.

They leased an ex-Emirates A300-600R one or two years ago and an ex-Air Afrique A310-300 from June 2002.

On one hand, it would be a great deal for LH.......the SQ A343s are great aircraft, in the most advanced version of the type. LH will be leasing their A342s to South African shortly, and the SQ 343s would be an ideal replacement. It is unclear if LH will want to reintroduce the "odd-duck" A342s to its fleet after South African is finished with them.

However, LH is also interested in the A330........it is one of the few large airlines without a long-range twin and the A330 would be ideal for LH transatlantic routes; both thinner routes out of FRA and developing routes out of MUN. The A330 is also a good replacement for the remaining A300s and A310s still flying long-haul for LH to points in Africa. What the A330 cannot do is effeciently replace the A300/310 on the short-haul German domestic routes, but that is another story.

While LH did pick up a second-hand A300 from Emeriates recently, it would be unusual for them to buy used aircraft in bulk; however, this may be a special case. Very interesting, as the SQ A340 fleet is quite a unique situation........why didn't Swiss puchase to replace their MD11s instead of buying new build aircraft?

the SIA aircraft are a very special case, you can consider them as almost new. And Boeing is giving them away for an apple and an egg, and I think Boeing & LH would both be happy to make another deal with each other, after the relationship cooled down a bit after the MD11 "issue"
