737 Under-belly Antenna Attacked Me! Ouch!

Tue Jun 18, 2002 1:18 pm

Saturday afternoon, I was loading the daily WN382 from here (SJC) to MCI, a 737-700. While running back and fourth from the jetway, under the plane, to retrieve late-checked strollers, I stood up a little too soon on my way under the plane. You all know those little white antennas you see sticking out of planes...well they're not that little, about a foot in length and hard as concrete. I jammed my back into the antenna, ripping a muscle behind my right lung. That night, it ruptured and I couldn't breath, resulting in me being rushed to the emergency room. I was released the next morning. I'm sitting here in my PJ's in pain, but recovering (with the help of Vikadin  Smile ) All I've been able to do at work is push-out all day. This accident has costed me tons of time doing paperwork and yada yada yada... I'm still attending the Airliners Convention in IAH on Thurs. though!  Big thumbs up

I have to hope that I never go bald.

Ran my head into a nav antenna on the bottom of a metro two and half years ago. cut my skull open. After I got the bleeding under control, I still finished my shift. They ended up not stiching it, but the flight nurse that took the first look at it thought that I might have needed about four stiches.

I jammed my back into the antenna, ripping a muscle behind my right lung.

Wow, that must've hurt like hell. You're lucky though, that it didn't stab you and hit any organs.

Anyway, get well!

Glad to hear your okay, we had a guy unhooking the airstart off a tower 747 he dropped it and when he came back up his head struck one of the antenna's after 20 stitches he was ready for more 747 action.

...I zigged when I should have zagged and walked right into it using my forehead as a hammer. OUCH!!!

I knew a guy who walked into a prop and sliced his nose right open leaving a nasty scare to this day. Would have been a much different outcome if the engine was running.

ALWAYS,,,I repeat ALWAYS pay attention to your surroundings when around an aircraft.

If anyone is familiar with the Pilatus PC-12, there is a metal "fin" right behind the prop on the underside, it's a good 1/8 of an inch thick. One time I dented one with my head while hooking up a towbar. The pilot was pissed that I bled all over the front cowling. It wasn't too fun!

Sometimes those blade antennas break when people bump into them. In Heavy MX, we always stick a length of tape on them so they'll be more visible and people won't get hurt.

Sorry to hear about your accident and good to hear you on the mend. Is it not a Southwest sop that you never go under the aircraft. I thought this was an industry standard but I may be wrong.

Chock head, it's an industry standard that you don't drive any equipment under the airplane, walking is fine, which is what I was doing...

LMP737- wasn't that antenna, it was the auto-pilot antenna, forward under belly b.

Anyways everybody, starting phsyical therapy tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.  Crying

I feel like such a wimp now! This post has been the most interesting read in a long time. I now have a lot more respect for the dangerous work rampers do in often nasty conditions. ...I just came back from a transcon trip where I cussed up a storm for spilling a little coffee on my uniform shirt's cuff! SJCguy, my hat's off to you, and best wishes for a speedy recovery. I hope you can use the time off to do even MORE 757 spotting! --Best wishes, flyua.

SJCguy:

If it was forward of the wing then you must have hit the VHF 3 antenna. The only other antenna's forward are the ATC and TCAS antenna's. The ATC antenna is only 3-4 inches long and the TCAS is flat.

Youll have much more clearance, length wise, with an MD-80. Or, Go A-320 and just walk right under  Smile

If I am stowing a gate-check, I usually just walk around the push back, and every thing. It makes it much simpler.

And how long do you think it will take the NTSB to determine that it was pilot error???

For those who aren't sure which antenna I'm talking about, it's the one you see here just under the engine, the large white one.

I've worked around 737's for a long time, you must have really squatted down to get under there, and I'm sure that you shouldn't have been walking under it in the first place, just cutting corners were you, trying to save a bit of time ??? Been there done that...  Smile
I cracked my head on the gear door on a B757 whilst connecting up the headset, and also trapped my fingers in the hold door handle loads of times on B737's......dangerous things these a/c !!!.

Hope you get better soon...... Big grin
