Your Shortest Flight?

Tue Sep 28, 1999 9:47 am

What is the shortest JET flight you have ever been on, or if you are a Pilot, have ever flown? It has to be a REGULARLY SCHEDULED flight, and it had to be on a JET type of aircraft - from a CRJ on up to 777. For me, two examples come to mind: MSY-IAH (310 mi.) in 49 minutes on a 757 and 737, and CLT-RIC (approx. 300 mi) in about 40 minutes on an F100 and a 737-400.

Oh, another example that comes to mind is FLL-MCO, which is about 250 miles, don't know what type of jet though.

Hi Bruce (Waving)!!

A number of airlines operate from SEA to PDX. Not sure what the miles are but it takes a mere 20-25 minutes.

US Air express at one time and may still have a flight from BWI-DCA. That was my only airliner jump seat ride. Unfortunately it was only 11 minutes airtime

I might have the record here. Last year when I flew to Korea on a World Airways MD-11(military charter), we were supposed to land at Suwan Air Base, but it was fogged in, so we were diverted to Kimpo. After 5 hours on the ground, we finally departed for Suwon. Flight time, 6 minutes. We climbed to 6,000 and that was it. If you blinked, you missed the flight!

Honolulu to Molokai, Hawaii (HNL-MKK) on a Hawaiian Airlines DC-9-51. 54 miles. They apologized because the flight was too short to serve drinks - I don't remember the exact flight time. I have also done the route in a Dash 7 (Hawaiian), ATR-42 (Mahalo Air) and Cessna 402 (Air Molokai).

Alaska Airlines has a flight every day from Petersburg to Wrangell, Alaska (and one in the other direction). 35 miles and about 20 minutes. I used to take the flight several times a summer. It originated in Seattle and went to Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Juneau, Yakatat, Cordova, and ended up in Anchorage. It was known as the "milk run"

SAN-LAX in 17 minutes. It was on CO, but I don't remember which type of aircraft. I was going home on military leave and it was quite a few years ago.

San Juan (SJU) to St. Thomas (STT) it's about 16 minitues long mostly on AA 757 and 727. On American Eagle the flight is listed as 25 min. It seems as is as soon as the plane levels off it's time to decend.

I have two flights. One was three years ago from Toronto (YYZ) to Windsor (YQG) on a Vista Jet 737-200. The airline lasted only one summer, and then folded. (Prices were too low, I guess - only $52 Round-trip in Canadian Dollars!) That flight was about 50 minutes. The other flight is not a regularily scheduled flight, but I feel it's worth mentioning anyways. That was on a Canadian Airlines 767-300 two weeks ago. Canadian had a charity flight from YYZ to Niagra Falls and back to YYZ, staying up in the air about 45 minutes, going over the falls, and then returning to Toronto. I also got a great view of the C.N. Tower and Skydome! This was the 21st year that Canadian has had this charity flight, and I sure hope that they will be around for a 22nd year.

SFO-OAK. There were three pax on the flight: my mom and me, and a businessman. The FA's thought we were crazy, but hey...when you have to go, you have to go! The businessman took the flight because he would be credited with 500mi. in Mileage Plus!

Since a plane burns the most fuel at takeoff it doesn't make sense to fly such short flights! It seems that it happens more than i realized. Are the airlines crazy?

Mine is by no means the shortest, but for such a large plane it's worth mentioning. On more than one occasion, I have taken American DC-10s LAX-SAN. The flight is 100 miles, and cruise altitude is 7-8 thousand feet. On one occassion, I was on the flight with just me and my sister in First Class, Business Class and the main cabin were totally empty. With more flight attendants than passengers, the service was extremely attentive considering the flight was only about 25 minutes (the length due to ATC constraints and the 250 kt. speed limit on flights at such low altitudes). I've also flown this route on a 767 and a 757, but now it's all Saab 340Bs.

I've been several times on BA's shuttle flights London - Glasgow and London - Edinburgh. Planes were B737 and B757. Flight duration about 50 mins.

Also, London - Glasgow by AirUK on BAe147 - around 1 hour and Fokker 100.

But the shortest was on a Aeroflot's Tu-154B-2 with flight time of 40 mins. Yakutsk - Mirniy (two cities in Siberia).

Several Caribbean hops I've done, all on AA:

San Juan-St. Thomas (on Hartford-San Juan-St. Thomas route)
St. Maarten-Antigua (From JFK)
Martinique-Guadeloupe (to JFK)

All are no more than 15-20 minutes in the air.

My experience is Lisbon/Faro. It takes 30 minutes sharp from pushback until final stop! Actual flight is about 15 minutes, during that time TAP serves a Mars ice-cream and a cup of water, and they must be fast otherwise the passengers will come out of the plane still eating it!!!

10 Min. ?

Wed Sep 29, 1999 1:26 am

Hello... If i understood well, you are discussing about the shortest flight (in time), right ? I have not read all posts, but i will tell you anyway... I flew 4 years ago from Aeroparque J. Newbery - Buenos Aires - Argentina, to Carrasco Int. Airport - Montevideo - Uruguay. The flight was through Ezeiza Intl. because of some conections with Iberia. As many of you may know, the flight between Carrasco and Aeroparque (MVD-AEP, i think), it takes about 40 min on a 737-200. But that time, we went from Aeroparque to Ezeiza (we were 9 pax) on a 737-200 and the flight took 10 minutes more or less... i do not remember exactly but it was SHORT ! Well... tell me if i am wrong. See you Martín aka Rombac111

Here's a short one - in a big plane!
Aer Lingus operates widebodies from Dublin to Shannon and back and has done ever since '71 when it got 747s. Up to a few years ago, it was mandatory (much to the irritation of Dublin people!) to stop at Shannon on the way to the US. An A330 takes about 20-25 minutes; on the way back, a Fokker 50 takes about 30-35.

Incidentally, Aer Lingus's EI-125 from Shannon to ORD involves the shortest and (one of the) longest A330-300 sectors. The SNN-DUB sector is 0h25 and the Dublin to Chicago leg is about 9hrs.

My shortest ever scheduled flight was from Jersey to Guernsey (in the Channel Islands - yes, those two or three little dots west of northern France!!). In a Trislander (not a plane you see too often), it takes about 10 minutes at about 1,000'.

The shortest flight I ever took in a jet-powered aircraft was about 40 minutes from Phoenix to San Diego. This was back in 1982, and it was a Delta L1011. A pretty quick hop considering the size of the aircraft, and when we landed in San Diego, the movie screen showed a view of the end of the runway coming up as we slowed down. I also once flew about an hour from Moscow to St. Petersburg on an Ilyushin IL86. The reason for such a huge aircraft on that short route was that there had been two flights cancelled and passengers sitting in the terminal since that morning. Well, we all needed to get to St. Petersburg, so they took basically three planeloads of people, stuffed them all into this huge IL and we took off. Later on that day, after I was home, I found out that radar had not been operating due to an air traffic controller strike...better not to know those things until after flying!

In 1986, flew Bahamasair 73S, NAS-TPA-MCO. NAS-TPA was 1:15, but from TPA-MCO was 12 minutes. I'd guess about 8,000 ft at max. The flight followed I-4 detween both airports. Does Delta Express fly between both airports?

Shortest 'commercial jet powered' flight I took was from Canberra-Albury-Woodonga (Australia) on a ERJ-145 on its demo tour close to 20 min. But regularly scheduled would be Brasilia-Goiania (Brazil) on a Varig 737-300 about ten years ago, which took approximately 25 min.

Years ago (maybe fifteen?) the aircraft for United's morning flights from Oakland to ORD and DEN would overnight in SFO, where UA has their maintenance base. So each morning a couple 727's would fly SFO to OAK, about 10 straight-line miles, and the flights were listed in the public timetable and were open to the public, as FLY777UAL suggests. Presumably they wouldn't get delayed that early in the morning, so takeoff-to-touchdown might have been five minutes or less. Never saw it, tho.

One of the shorter flights has to be the Bahrain - Dhahran route in the Persian Gulf.. Takes between 10-15 minutes... I made this flight back in 1985 with
Gulf Air Boeing 737, this route is also served by Saudia... Have in mind that this is also an international flight..

South Bend

Thu Sep 30, 1999 12:33 am

Although not the shortest, I often fly from South Bend to Chicago and back. Total flight time is 20 mins and both United Express and American Eagle fly the route. Although United usually uses the BAe ATP, I have on occasion seen an Emb RJ at South Bend.
Another short one that I've done is South Bend to Cincinnati (30 mins on a Delta 737-200 or Comair RJ). South Bend to Detriot (30 mins on a Northwest DC-9 and BAe 146).
Being right in the middel of several major hubs, South Bend has many short flights like these. I think the longest runs from SBN are to Pitssburg on US Airways.
