What The Hell Is Mahan Air Doing?

Fri Jun 21, 2002 6:23 am

Hi,

Whilst I was exploring a few airline sites I came across the following, which I found extremely disturbing.

On the website ( http://www.mahanairlines.com ) of the Iranian carrier Mahan Air, there is a pop-up ad when you 1st enter the site.
It reads:

Simulator Training Now Available
Training in A300-B4 simulator (GE CF6-50C2 engines) is now available in our flight crew training centre in Kerman-Iran. For more information please contact Manager of Flight Crew at airmahan@peyam.net

Now if they'd just got a simulator for the training of their crews that's OK. However, why on Earth would they advertise this fact so much and say it's 'now available' and that people can contact them for more information? It sounds to me like anyone can go on a course with Mahan Air to learn how to fly A300s even if they're not actually going to work for an airline.

I think it's obvious where I'm going with this. With quite a few f**ked up people in that part of the world who have an interest in mass murder, I find it very worrying if the airline is doing what I think it is.

Almost every airline offers their flight simulators to 3rd parties, either to meet the long-term or ad-hoc training needs of other airlines, or private individuals. As a matter of fact most airlines offer a range of training facilities to other airlines.

From the wording of the advertisement, this is clearly aimed at other airlines. There is no idication that Mahan Air would allow private individuals to fly their simulator, and you wouldn't get much from a one hour session anyway. BA allow private individuals to fly their simulators, why shouldn't Mahan Air do the same?!?

I see what you're getting at, just don't agree with it  Confused

Plus, anyone with the required qualifications can approach any major FTO and buy themselves a type rating. The sort of money you're talking about for a type rating would be fairly inconsequential to a well-funded terrorist organisation...

Don't get your nickers in a knot, airlines have whole academies devoted to flight training, certainly not for just their pilots, that would never be profitable. As a result they train crews for other airlines. This is the same thing, on a smaller scale.

In Vancouver, you can fork over $250 for an hour in a sim.

You should be just as suspiscious about Air Canada and virtually every other airline. Don't be so paranoid, it won't do you much good.

I was going to respond, but have decided that it isn't worth my time or energy in writing anything more than this

Can we have a two thumbs down rating for posts in future?

If people would only inform themselves before starting such a thread... Thankfully there are many other people here, who are well-informed and rectify such hair-raising statements.

Oooooh one star- my best rating yet!

I stand by my comments. Iran is a known sponsor of terrorism and for Mahan to so blatantly say "hey we'll teach anyone to fly a plane" is irresponsible as far as I'm concerned.

How can you possibley say a Middle Eastern airline offering airliner flying lessons to 'Joe Public' is just the same as a western airline?! Of course other airlines do the same, but they're not in the world's hot spot for Muslim extremists.

So think what you like about me, but I believe Mahan aren't helping the fight against terrorism by so publicly displaying the fact that it's possible for anyone to learn to fly.
