What Is The Loudest Plane On Takeoff?

Sun Jun 23, 2002 5:06 am

I live in Los Angeles, and after picking up Double Doubles from In-N-Out, my family and I head to the end of rwys 25L and 25R to watch takeoffs up close and personal. From this spot you can see what gender the pilots are (great spot). I and not a fan of noise restrictions or quiet aircraft so I camp out at LAX. BUR, SNA, LGB, and ONT suck for variety and loud aircraft. Below are the aircraft I love to see taxiing to 25R in order of pure noise. The 737-200 would normally top the list, but I haven't caught one in years. They must leave when I am at work.

1. Any 727, even with hush kits that thankfully don't work.
2. AeroCalifornia DC9's when fully loaded
3. BAX DC8's
4. AA MD82's (most frequent noise maker of list)
5. MD11's, GE or PW, when fully loaded
6. AA or UA 777-200, AF has a GE powered 777 but it's just not as loud
7. 737-800's for some reason are pretty loud

The truly sorry performers are listed below starting with the quietest.

1. A319/A320. (aka church mouse)
2. 757 PW powered
3. 737 all models except -800
4. 767 all models
5. DC10 all models
6. 747-400 all engines
7. 747-200 GE or PW
8. A300B4F's

Give me your lists and airports...

ROFL....Church mouse. That really is appropriate. I just see them rolling along the runway....You don't really hear them.

I really used to love the 737-200's over here at BRU, especially when I used to stand at the beginning of RWY25R (where they built a huge wall a while ago) and the pilots spooled up the engines at the beginning of the roll on RWY25R. Man, nothing beats a 737-200, that's for sure (well, except for an F-16 with full afterburner then).

As Sabena 690 already pointed out, I think 727's are one of the loudest aircraft we get to see nowadays at BRU I think, except maybe for the widebodies then.

But it's true, the newer generation of aircraft has much lower noise levels than before. From an environmental point of view, this is a good thing I think, but yes, from an aviation enthusiast's perspective, it's just not the same old thing.

Well, we didnt restrict this to any sort of a/c, so I would have to say an F-14....

Those are really loud... for a small plane...

Of course, they get a lot of thrust...

which means the engines are big...

Used to live close to Milan Linate airport (LIN / LIML), in the Seventies. The loudest was by far the Hawker Siddeley Trident, operated by British Airways to London. Nearly broke the windowpanes every time. Close second the BAC 1-11 (same engines I think, only it had 2 not 3). But nothing came close to the furious roar of the Trident.

Yeah....F-14s and F-18s are very loud. I live near the pattern for Miramar....and those puppies rock my windows sometimes. Its obnoxious though when you are trying to sleep and they are streaking by at 0200. AHH.

Was leaving from ORD to IAH taking my baggage out of the rental for curbside pick up when I hear the absolute loudest take off ever, not hearing anything like that before I walk out into the middle of the street and look up.......

B-1 bomber departing ORD, amazing.....

Concorde, B1 bomber, U2, F-4 Phantom, F-15 with afterburners. I've heard all these but none of them are as loud as the old KC-135's with water injection.

Are we all forgetting about the EAR PIERCING loudness of the Lear 24? I think that is definitely louder than a 737. Higher pitch, and that snap crackle pop sound out of the back. Personally....one of my favorites in terms of loudness.

No question: the B-36. Too bad we'll never hear one again. Some buildings in Fort Worth are still vibrating from B-36 takeoffs.

The Vulcan is very very infamous around where I used to live. In Manchester, within a mile of Woodford, when the original Vulcan engine testing program was carried out there. My parents said it was so loud, even being quite far away, that you could feel it through the house!!!

I've seen it at the woodford airshow, and the Airbus friends and family day, and its very loud!

Also, the Hawker Hunter, very loud!!!

Commercial airliner wise, probably the CV990 (I have distinct memorys of a Spantax specimen, bloody hell!!), the 707 and the (surprisingly) DC10. I heard a DC10 at AMS when I was spotting there, and it felt more powerful and louder than the tu-134 of Pulkovo that I saw there.

...have you ever had a close stand when a BAC-111 gives full throttle...??

...if you have, you won't forget it, the sound beats easily a DC-8-55 (not a quiet one, either...)!

The BAC1-11 was by far, the loudest plane my ears ever experienced. Even hushkitted. On a cold winter morning, you could hear the crackle of those Speys for miles. I remember those Mohawks and Alleghenys taking off from PVD. I grew up just a mile from T.F. Green Airport.

For me the loudest were the CV-880s/990s,Dc8-20/30/40, 707-all series/720s especially the turbojet powered versions,
BAC1-11s
Tridents especially the 3B with its turbojet booster
727s
737s
Dc9s especially the 20 and 50 series.
TU-134s and 104s
Vc-10s
Todays jets are simply boring.

Well, I assume we're not talking about the SPACE SHUTTLE(!!!) here, so I'll drop $.40 more into the toll booth:

At MDW, the old ATA 722s are louder than the SW 732s, the SW 733s are noisy for some reason, the 753s get pretty loud because it appears they follow some special noise abaitment procedures, however, I'd say the loudest takeoff would go to the B-52 prototypes, but that's just me.
I don't know, so this is my signature.

Here at Salt Lake we sometimes get a Casino Express 737-200 and that bad boy is loud. But as far as planes being the loudest, F-105's, Harriers and A-6's. When I moved here in the early 80's the Reserve unit at Hill were still flying the -105's. Ouch, they were painfully loud.

Several TUs are loud. I think Convair 880s were the loudest. Amazingly they probably were the most quiet inside at cruise. Some say the 990s were loud. But I've been around many 990s at T.O. and never heard much noise. Smoke?, yes. But their high bypass GE engines were fairly quiet for the day. 727s were much louder.

The DC-7 was an enormously noisy and powerful craft. Fire could be seen at the exhausts at night. But few jets remained loud aloft like the XC-99s did (commercial versions of B-36s [sort of]). Actually there was and is only one example but it was designed for Pan Am. At 50,000 feet up you still knew there was either a B-36 or an XC-99 aloft.

But at T.O. many Brits with a memory of the 40s and 50s would agree that the DC-6s with Spitfire engines (for the British airlines) were rather decebel enclined. You certainly could not sneak off.

But transitioning between idle and taxi an L1011 could be noticed easily ten miles away sounding like a walrus in love.

The 727 is loud? The loudest to the ear in current airline use, with the exception of the Concorde, must surely be A DC-9-80.

But the loudest I've ever heard is the Tornado. That beast makes the AZ Air National Guard call DM AFB to complain and they fly F-16s. OK, I'm kidding a bit about the call to DM.

F/A-18s, F-15s, C-5B Galaxy on takeoff, P&W powered 707-300s and RB211 powered 747-200s top my list.

On a more regular basis up until recently though was the Fokker F.28-4000. Those baby Speys were special. Wish I could have heard the bigger Speys on the BAC-111.

LOL about the L1011. I grew up in Pacific Beach (8mi away from SAN) in San Diego...and when DL flew the 1011s to HNL I could always here them when they landed. I miss that big hoover sound. Anyone ever been blown down buy a plane before?

USAF AWACS aircraft, (707s) are really loud. My grandma works on Tinker AFB, I got to go out and see some AWACS action one time, it was great. I was down there for a week and at about 10:30 at night we ended up right under the flight path for AWACS approaching Tinker, I thought a flight of F-16s was passing over. The entire house was vibrating, it was sweet!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

B-1s are really loud too, one was sent up here to Kansas City for a 4th of July celebration a few miles from my house. My house is on a hill, and we didn't make it to the place in time to see it up close, but I was standing in my back yard and I heard this thunderous roar and I looked a few miles off and saw the B-1 doing a REALLY low level flyover. It was probably 2, 300 feet in the air.

727s and 732s are really loud as well. I was taking photos of departures one Monday morning during spring break a year and a half ago, standing on the top of my dads truck about 1/4 of a mile from the runways end...and this AA 727 flew right over me maybe 150 feet in the air, could've been 200. I almost fell off the truck 'cause of the noise (maybe part of it was trying to track it with the camera, but it was still REALLY loud), it was excellent.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Northwest's DC-9s can be identified by both their loud rumble and the smoke plume following them through the sky. Only plane I can identify from 10 miles away.

An-24 has to be the loudest twin engined turboprop in the world. Damm hat iis loud!. I remember when I was a kid my grandfather would take me to Jose Marti international in Havana and even during engine startup those Antonovs were loud. Taxing was loud, Takeoff wasnt that loud though. Il have to say the loudest on takeoff i've ever heard was a Cubana Tu-154M. I was on a flight to Guayaquil (on board another Tu-154M) while taxing down to the end of the runway i rememberd seen another cubana tu-154m holdoing short at the end f the runway and all of the sudden that aircraft went to full throttle and thats when it all began. That Cubana Tu-154 i was inside of vivrated from the noise the other one made as it accelerated at full throttle for takeoff. I would never forget that sound because of the power it had. incredibly how it made the AC i was on vivrate.

I don't know how the 777-200 and 737-800 made the list as some of your loudest favorites and 744 not being loud.

A Northwest 744 took off over me at DTW yesterday, and yes it doesn't have the same type of low bypass roar of a DC-9 or 727, but the 744 is VERY loud for a modern aircraft, it shook the whole gas station that i was at as it passed overhead. There is nothing as ballsy as a 747 taking off, there is no mistaking the thunder it makes.

Here at BOM, the 737-200's are definitely the loudest among regular visitors.

There is also a weekly Il-62 operated by some African airline which is certainly the loudest.

The V2500 powered A320's , while not exceptionally loud make a strange sound as they pass over.

HUYfan, the Olympus engines fitted to the Vulcan were not reheated, still, it was loud enough!
At LHR, it's Concorde, until the end of September it's Northern runway operation only for Concorde while the Southern runway is resurfaced.
Any A.Net members on or around the Northside visitor centre while aircraft are taking off westwards should get themselves over to the perimeter road before the BA001 departs.
The best spot is in front of the car park, in front of the BA hangars, where the semi-derelict Budget building is.
The BA001 will go right over your head, (and no being softies and covering your ears!), then the BA001 turns tightly to the right, you'll feel a mild buffeting and the smell of kerosene.
The Trident's were very loud too, and unlike Concorde took forever to get airborne.
The VC-10's made a racket too.
Now the IL-86's have gone, Concorde is the loudest regular LHR user by far.

In my experience, the 727 and the MD80 are the loudest during takeoff. I haven't really "heard" the Concorde yet but I'm sure it has the previous planes beat.

The older 727's are NOISY. Talking the -100 and -50 models. The newer ones got a lot quieter. I used to go to the observation deck at DFW and man those old 727's would booom for miles at takeoff. Nowadays they all have hush kits tho  Sad

Another real loud one, is the JT3 equipped DC-8. I used to live in SE Austin, TX, and when they opened the new Bergstrom International for cargo ops in 96 (3 yrs before passenger ops) BAX, UPS and Emery flew DC8-61F's overhead and they would shake my house!

The DC 8-63

Ugo Vicenzi wrote in his book "Early American Jetliners" the following sentence:

"DC 8-63. This version was the noisiest of the subsonic jetliners and also required the longest runway. It therefore became to hear of two-minute take-off runs in the rarefied air of La Paz. ..."

Can anybody confirm?

Do the old KC-135's still fly with waterinjectioned engines???

Don't think there are any A models left flying except NASA's 'vomit comet' and I don't think that one is loaded enough on take off to require H20 injecton.

KC-135A's (the loud ones) were re-engined and became KC-135R's etc. These re-engined KC-135's are 96% quieter than the original model.

Hi folks, I've stood behind (about 80m behind, and 15m to the left) a 732 and MD-80 while they've spooled up and taken off, and trust me, they aren't even as loud as a 707 on approach.

CV-990, DC-8 and 707-300/400 still get my vote!

The KC135R's having the CFM56's on them are ungodly quiet, compared to the old "A" J57's!!

When a lightly-loaded KR35 comes in for an option approach on a calm day, you can barely even hear them from a mile away when they're "on the go"..

It's amazing how much quieter they are over the "E" model with the TF33's.
