DC-9-10/-30 Operating Costs

Sun Jun 23, 2002 8:36 am

They're definitely old and rusty, but they sure are beautiful! How much does it cost to run one of these birds by the hour?

Thanks, Penguin! Do you happen to have the link to that page? I've searched for the past few months on bts.gov and through google.com, but have been unsuccessful in finding that page!

Thanks again!

Form 41 fillings can only be viewed in person in Washington DC, or from a 3rd party researcher/analyst/consultant that republishes the information for one reason or another. Aviation Daily (if you can get access to it) usually publishes this information.

Hey any of you know the operation cost from the 717 and 737-8??

AM is planning to reduce costs so they said they wanted to get away all their DC9s from their fleet to get only either 717 or 737-8Ng.

Also can you please tell me the operation cost of the A319/320 and the B727, because MX is getting rid of the 727s and getting 319s.

Thx,

Avg. Cost Per Hour/Cost Per Available Seat Mile (CASM)
717-200 - $2,009/6.1 cents
A319 - $1,866/3.9 cents
A320-200 - $2,496/4.4 cents
737-800 - $2,151/3.8 cents

The lower the CASM the generally longer routes that they are used on. And this can vary significantly depending on the length of the flights, with shorter flights usually having a much higher CASM. For example, most regional jets have CASMs that are in the double digits (varying from 8 to 18.8 cents per ASM), yet are ever increasing in number in the US because of their success and profitability.

All figures from US airline's 3Q2001 FOrm 41 fillings.

Thanks again, Penguin! Do you think it would be possible to get a copy of that whole list from you via e-mail? (if not--what would the MD-80 family go for per hour?)

Thanks so much!

Sorry, but I don't have info on any DC-8s or 707s, partly because there are no part 121 operators in the US that are using them for passenger service.

How about cost of large widebody's, such as the B767-300(ER)/-400ER and the A330-300, and the B777.

They must be around 3 or even 4G's?

I don't understand... how could a 763 cost $1,000 more per hour than a 764? Furthermore, how could a 777 cost more than an A330? Can someone please hook me up with some info? Thx.

Much of the difference in 763 and 764 costs are crew costs and the fact that since most 764s are still under warrenty, they have far lower maintenance costs.

The fact that USAirways A330s (the only airline that operates the A330 for which I have data) are more expensive per hour should be no surprise. Their hourly crew costs are almost doube the most expensice 777 crew costs (United, BTW). And when it costs you about $1,500 more per hour for your crew, well, you get the picture...

I can give you a wet lease ACMI cost. (all US $)
Aircraft Crew Maintenance Insurance, no fuel.

DC9-30 US$950 - USD1200 per hour
717-200 $1950 - 3000 per hour
B737-200 $1050 - 1400 per hour
B737-300 $1750 - $2750 per hour
A319 & B737-700 $2000 - $3000 per hour
A320 $2500 - $3500 per hour

These are wet leases, price varies between age of aircraft, its history, expected utility, lessee experience and financial health, and length of contract.

Hope this helps
