How Much Do Airlines Usually Pay Victim's Family?

Mon Jun 24, 2002 4:58 am

How much do airlines usually pay victim's family when the death is a directly result of the plane crash? (except in cases of terrorism, hijacking, war, govt/military action, etc...)

I'm asking this because I just read that China Airlines and Singapore Airlines(crash at TPE) have paid families over USD$300,000 for each victim who died in the crash. With the latest CI crash, the figures will be up to between USD$400k and USD$500k.

This is on top of whatever the victims have in life/accident insurance.

Aren't the airlines liability limited to much smaller sums? Do U.S. airlines pay more or less for similar crashes?

Airlines must give US$70 000 to each victim's family under the Warsaw convention.

Singapore Airlines Limited has offerred each deceased victim's family US$400 000 + US$ 25 000 + US$ 5 000. The people injured have been offerred US$ 25 000 + US$ 5 000.

Air France has offered each decased victim's family US$ 1 100 000 (approx) each, and the families are waiving their right to sue (I think).

http://www.insurancejournal.com/html/ijweb/breakingnews/archives/international/in0700/in0726001.htm

My insurance agent sent me the above link. She said the Air France Concorde crash victim families received a little over 2 millions(USD$) per victim. By comparison, Singapore Airlines "only" paid USD$400k each? (while still more than what China Airlines usually pays)

Why is there such a big difference among the airlines? Does it have to do with the type of insurance/policy/underwriter the airline has?

What is the normal sum paid by US airlines? (such as ValueJet, Pan Am 103, TWA800 crashes...)

Thanks for any info

Bobcat: That is quite weird as I know that the victim's 'only' received US$1.1 million from Air France, and US$ 430 000 from Singapore Airlines.

China Airlines has just offerred US$ 368 750 per victim for CI611.

I actually was going to post about this very topic myself. I'm glad you posted it and look forward to some answers.

I am sure that there are some laws and agreements in the past that set a minimum amount for airlines to pay out. And I'm sure that it also largely depends on the airline's coverage and its accident history... the more accident, the more high-risk therefore the higher the premium.
