Want To Start A Forest Fire-land A Robinson Helo

Mon Jun 24, 2002 8:37 pm

Apparently Robinson R44 helicopters have been blamed for starting two recent forest fires in Alaska. One of them burned 85,000 acres of trees.

In the case one of the operators of the helo and the utility company that chartered it is being charge for the costs of fighting the fire the helicopter started.

Apparently the problem lies in the design of the helicopters exhaust system which is very close to the ground, close enought that it will heat grass to the point of combustion.
