Thanks for the information, LMML! What a pity, I would have prefered a 737NG order - but nobody asked me.

Nobody asked me either. Not that it would have mattered. I for one am glad KM opted for an Airbus fleet. There would have been one small problem with an NG fleet: the parking bays at MLA would have had to be redesigned as, with the larger wingspan, the NG's cannot use the inside bays and there are not enough outside bays to accommodate an entire fleet. Of course, I hardly think this influenced the decision at all.

Good news, finally Air Malta made its mind up. I was wonering though how many aircraft will they lease? and what is the mix of A318/A319/A320/A321 ?

The decision seems to centre around the A319 and A320. Probably based on the former rather than the latter. Which will maintain the present capacity. We are still waiting for the official announcement, however, which is expected to include the unveiling of a new livery. AirMalta will celebrate the 30th anniversary in 2004.

From the times of malta article:

Talks have been held over the past weeks with Airbus and the American manufacturer, Boeing.

Weeks? this decsion has been in the works for a few months at least!
But anyway, I would have loved to see a Boeing order, but if the Airbus is better suited to Air Malta's needs, then more power to them.
I wish KM the best of luck with the new fleet, and cant wait to see the new colors!

Can't wait to see the new Air Malta livery... HOPING that it is even better than the present one, of which I am quite fond.

The negotiations took months (remember that the anouncement was due on May 15th!!), but there seems to have been some 'last minute' talks in the past few weeks.

On Friday, I was spotting at Malta International Airport (MLA) and a guy from Cologne had just visited the Air Malta Head Office. He told me that at the head offices, he was told that they have decided for 7 A319s and 5 A320s... which in my opinion is superb.

Personally, I thought that they might include 1 or 2 A321s, but I think that the A321s have a bit too much capacity for Air Malta.

Anyway... we'll check the official anouncment.

Best regards to all  Wink/being sarcastic

Wingspan?

Wed Jun 26, 2002 12:18 am

LMML 14/32: Does the difference in wing-span really matter at MLA? There is only a small difference: 737-600/700/800/900: 34.30 meters and 32x: 34.10 meters. It is only 20 cms difference (about 7.9 inches).

ZRH: It matters more in Malta where things are in miniature. The difference in the wingspan is between the B733 and the B737NG.
