Aero Continente: Once Again Linking US And Iquitos

Wed Jun 26, 2002 4:09 am

Aero Continente is once again linking the United States and the Peruvian Amazon city of Iquitos with it's new twice-weekly non-stop service between the Amazon city and Miami, which started very early this morning. The service operates from Iquitos to Miami on Mondays and Fridays, leaving IQT at 2000 and arriving in Miami at 2330. The departure is on Tuesdays and Saturdays, leaving Miami at 0200 and arriving in Iquitos at 0530. The flight operates with a Boeing 767-200 in a two class configuration. In addition, Aero Continente offers non-stop service from Miami to Lima and Guayquil, and subsidiary Aero Continente Dominicana offers service to Santo Domingo. In the future, Aero Continente hopes to expand thier service in Miami by adding flights to Ecuador and Peru, as well as opening up service to Ft. Lauderdale.

Iquitos has long been served by once weekly flights from Miami. Faucett was the first one to develop the route between Iquitos and Miami. They used to operate the flight on Saturdays with their L-1011s, and when they went bankrupt AeroPeru took over the same flight with their 757s. The route was abandoned when AeroPeru went bankrupt.

Iquitos is the tourist capital of the Peruvian Amazon, and also an important oil producing area for Petroperu, the state oil company.

Chepos, flight time is four hours. The timing is very uncomfortable, but for Latin American flights, as I am sure you know, anything and everything goes. Plus tourists and businessman can get into Iquitos early enough for a full day. For people coming from Iquitos, the flight works with connections on Martinair to Amsterdam and Iberia to Madrid.

Despite the recent negative media attention that N6 has recieved I really hope that they get their act together and get positive attention. The best of luck to Aero Continente, and if anybody flies: TAKE PICTURES OF THE CABIN!!!
