China Airlines 747 Crashed While On Autopilot

Wed Jun 26, 2002 11:29 pm

According to Reuters Asia, the China Airlines 747 crashed while it was on autopilot. This was determined from the recovered flight data recorder of the plane. Autopilot was on until the very end when the recorder stopped recording. However, the cockpit wreckage shows the autopilot as having been disengaged.

Hmmm.... does this mean pilot error can now be ruled out? Are there other crashes that occurred while the aircraft was on autopilot?

From the start it looked like the pilots were innocent. It is not that easy for pilots to be able to cause the inflight break-up of their aircraft in the climb!!

Bobcat: Yes. I think this means that pilot error is definately ruled out. The investigators also said that pilot error was not a factor yesterday.

Looks like CI pilots aren't at fault this time. Good.

I thought they recovered the CVR and not the DFR (or did they find them both by now?)
Anyway, It is possible, in theory, that the DFR stopped working when the A/P was ON and the pilot disconnected it later when he tried to bring the aircraft under control.

Don't forget that the AA587 FDR stopped working 6 seconds (if I remember right) before the crash.

Long live the B747
