Air Atlanta/Virgin 747 Classics

Thu Jun 27, 2002 9:37 pm

Its a bit strange to me that Virgin now leases two of its former Classics from Air Atlanta (TF-ATW, TF-ATN) and pays for a full repaint while they still have a few others of the same age parked in the desert. How can that be cheaper? Labour costs maybe? Insurance? But this way they must have to pay for aircraft twice somehow.

The Air Atlanta examples has been operating with Virgin for quite some years and are both from a technical and cabin layout point of view up to date. The aircraft parked up in the desert have long been empty inside. It would probably be very costly to have them refitted with seats and they would certainly have to have a heavy maintenance before returning to service. All in all the Air Atlanta aircraft should be the easiest and less expensive way to deal with the need for aircraft.
