Is United Airlines Channel 9 Dead?

Sat Jun 29, 2002 6:15 am

I recently flew UAL from IAD-DEN-YYC-ORD-IAD and none of the flights broadcast the usual Channel 9. Yet, the inflight magazine said that Ch. 9 will carry ATC. What exactly is the official word on Channel 9?

Channel 9 is absolutely alive and well! Some Captains may choose to turn off the system, but as I said recently in another posting, it never hurts to ask a crewmember if it could be turned on. Most flight crews I've worked with recently have been more than happy leave Channel 9 on for all to enjoy!

I had it today on my flight MSP-ORD. UA flight 336. I have always asked if it could be turned on if it isn't. Most times the FA's will relay the message to the captain. If they don't I use channel 4 and relax. (at least the old channel 4). MSY-MSP

This is a dumb question but... what reason would the Captain have for turning it off? You only hear ATC transmissions correct? Not the actual conversation in the cockpit.. I asked the FA on my CDG-ORD flight a while back to turn it on and it never happened.. I just watched some PTV.. 777's a great jet  Smile Anyways, just wondering bout that..

Well, one reason is that they COULD forget... They are busy and It's not a checklist item "obs. ent......ON and Checked." but ya that's a good question, other than forgetting... I'd like to know if there is any other reason as well.

Is still alive.

But since you're flying from Washington DC, I think the pilots are not willing to turn on Channel 9 when flying from/to Washington.

On the last UA flight I was on Channel 9 was up and running and that was a flite out of IAD. I am not sure what the issue if there is one out of DCA. But as it has been previously stated it is Capt.'s discretion.
I Don't know where I am anymore

I'm a big fan of Channel 9 myself... but I HAVE noticed that it has been not been turned on on my last four flights.

ORD-MSP 1299
MSP-ORD 334

ORD-HKG 895
HKG-ORD 896

I requested it to be turned on on all four flights. Hmmmm...
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

Pilots thinks it's better to turn off Channel 9 in Washington Region in case something happens.
