LGA RWY 13 Takeoffs And Landings!

Sun Jun 30, 2002 12:01 pm

RWY 4/22 was closed today for maintenance (as will probably be the case ever Saturday for the remainder of the summer), which left RWY 13/31 as the only one open. RWY 31 was used in the morning, but they switched to 13 around noon. Aside from maybe a few private aircraft, I've actually never seen 13 commercial jet landings before. I know these landings are quite rare and the NYC Department of Corrections doesn't like planes landing over Rikers (as is the case if they land on 13), but it looked really cool. My questions are: how often do they use RWY 13 for landings? How come they don't use it more often? I heard that it has something to do with interfering with the traffic at Teterboro. Is that true?

Also, with regards to RWY 13 take-offs, after the plane lifts off, it turns immediately to the south. Today, all the planes took off and maintained a straight heading. I’ve never seen this before either. How often this happen? And why did they use this takeoff heading?

And if any of you want to factor JFK traffic into this, departures used 13R and arrivals landed on VOR 13L. Pretty typical, so I don’t see how that could have influenced anything.

Thanx!

Nobody seemed to answer the first time, so I'll post again to refresh. Is anyone familiar with LGA ATC movements?

Hey Rai.  Smile

Well, they did this yesterday and today. I was very surprised, and almost relieved that I didn't go down to the water to catch the 1:30 Delta 727 landing on 31.....when it turned out to have changed to 13 and landed there.

They did this last weekend also.

I think the DOC needs to mind their business.

Actually, I think landing on 13 is good. there aren't as many tall buildings over the Bronx, so there are no quick drops in altitude like aircraft is forced to do when landing on 31 or 4.

Why they close 4/22 on weekends? i'm not sure, but I think some of it might be due to PAPD helicopter traffic (amybe training) closer to Rwy 4.

On June 8 I landed on Runway 13, which is the first time I have ever done that in all the years I have been flying into LGA. I have taken off from that runway many times, but I've never landed on it before. The approach was very unusual.

fellow LGA spotters, lend me your ears.

Rai, I still have to show you the video from 13.

We'll have to set another spotting date soon.

We'll be in touch.

RWY13 is used a lot in the early morning for landings or late nights too, esp. on weekends.. it's river visual RWY 13. When planes take off on 13, they usually use the Whitestone climb (which has a left turn followed by a right turn). If the winds are bad, or an a/c requests another departure they can use Flushing Climb, which is a straight climb until about 3 miles out of LGA where they turn left. There's also Coney Climb which is a right turn only, and Maspeth climb which is two right turns.

so based on what you said, it appears they were using Flushing Climb after T/O RWY13. Usually it is kind of rare to be landing on RWY13 and departing RWY13, but with 4/22 closed, I see why they need to do this.

Last friday, i was picking my dad up at JFK and they were using 13 for landings, it seems that they follow the hudson river northward and then turn to 13 to line up with the runway, its neat watching them fly over your head when your on the Major Deegan aproaching the Triboro Bridge. they look like they are going to land in the water.

Co 757-300, I assume you meant you were picking up your dad at LGA. That is the approach to RWY13. I believe just north of the north end of central park (displaced over to the Hudson river), the planes are supposed to make the turn to RWY13. It is very cool, esp being on the Triboro Bridge, by the toll plaza, and seeing them land.

I got out of work early this aM and happened to look to the West Side over the river and saw a United 757 on river visual. Beautiful sight to see after working a 15 hour shift.

Any LGA spotters, shows yourselves.

So far, we have, who I already have met, Rai, Mirrodie, and Jcxp.

Who else?

BigPhil, Mirrodie! What's up, guys! Mirrodie, I would LOVE to see that 13 approach video! Thankfully, they've used 13 for approaches the last few days. I have a feeling it will be a regular occurrence this summer...providing favorable wind conditions.

As for why they close 4/22 on Saturdays, it's for maintenance. Last summer, they closed 13/31 on Saturdays for the same reason. It was really cool seeing 22 take-offs, especially since they roar right over my apartment! I actually saw the construction crews working away at the tip of 22. They work on Saturdays because that's LGA's quietest day (it’s still pretty busy!) and it’s when they can get away with using just one runway.

Phil, I agree with you about DOC. Good thing the FAA doesn’t listen to them. DOC doesn’t like planes landing over because they’re paranoid. I actually worked on a project evaluation where they requested money for a new communications system just in case a plane crashes somewhere on the island. We approved it, not because they needed it, but because we didn’t want to fight with them.

Anyways, I am most definitely down for another spotting gathering.

I'm glad somebody else noticed this. I live across the river in NJ on the cliffs and usually the planes coming in go up the river quite a way before making their big right turn over the Bronx into 22.

Today while I was jogging I saw a DL 767 make a very hard and steep right at about 96th Street and wondered what the hell was going on. Glad I'm not paranoid.

It has to make for some spectacular views for the passengers, though nothing beats the southbound approach over Manhattan at night, the big u-turn over the Statue of Liberty, and then buzzing the houses down onto Rwy 4.
